Explains the four-part build-up of a monument job — material, shaping, engraving, and installation. The calculator sizes stone volume from width × height × depth (converted from cubic inches to cubic feet) and prices bronze markers per square inch of face rather than by volume, since cast bronze plaques are priced by face area, not thickness. Granite and marble get a per-cubic-foot rate that varies by material (black granite runs pricier than gray, reflecting real quarry costs) and a $300 floor cost, since even a small marker still needs handling and shaping labor. Shaping and polishing scale with monument type: a flat marker needs a fraction of the finishing work an upright or family monument does, so that cost is a percentage multiplier on the raw stone cost rather than a flat fee. Engraving cost is per-character and tiered by complexity (basic sandblasted lettering vs. custom artwork vs. laser-etched portraits) plus a flat design fee for anything beyond bare lettering.
Upright and family monuments also carry a poured concrete foundation cost, sized to the stone's footprint plus an overhang allowance, which flat and bevel markers skip entirely. Finally a setting/installation fee (dealer labor) and a separate cemetery placement fee (paid to the cemetery, not the dealer) round out the total. The estimate also reports the finished weight, using typical densities for granite, marble, and bronze, which matters for delivery and lifting equipment planning. Frequently Asked Questions
Why does bronze cost so differently from granite or marble?
Cast bronze markers are priced per square inch of the finished face (about $0.40/sq in here) rather than by volume, because a bronze plaque is a thin cast panel, not a thick block of shaped stone. Granite, marble, and color granite are instead priced per cubic foot of finished stone, since those monuments are solid material that has to be quarried, cut, and polished all the way through.
Why is there a $300 minimum on the material cost?
Even a small flat or bevel marker still requires handling, cutting to size, and shaping labor that doesn't scale down proportionally with a tiny stone volume. The calculator applies a $300 floor to granite, marble, and color-granite jobs (not bronze, which is priced separately) so very small monuments aren't shown at an unrealistically low material cost.
Why do upright and family monuments cost so much more to shape than flat markers?
Shaping and polishing cost is a percentage of the raw stone cost, and that percentage rises with monument type — 30% for a flat marker up to 120% for a family monument — because uprights and family monuments have more polished faces, a shaped top profile, and more finished surface area overall. A flat marker only needs its top face finished, while a family monument may have several polished sides.
What's the difference between the setting fee and the cemetery placement fee?
The setting fee is paid to the monument dealer for transporting and physically installing the piece — it ranges from $100 for a flat marker set directly in the ground up to $600 for a family monument needing heavy equipment. The cemetery placement fee is a separate charge the cemetery itself levies for permitting the installation, and it steps up to $300 once you're placing an upright or family monument rather than a flat, bevel, or slant marker.
