Moving Timeline Calculator

Generate a week-by-week moving schedule with task counts, packing start date, and critical deadlines.

About this calculator

This calculator builds a task-count model of your move rather than a generic checklist, so the schedule it produces scales with how complex your specific move actually is. It starts from a baseline of 15 universal tasks (things every mover deals with regardless of home size), then adds 3 tasks per bedroom for packing, 8 additional tasks if you flag the move as long-distance (covering research on movers, address changes, and setting up utilities in a new state), and 6 more if you own your current home (covering repairs, staging, listing, and closing paperwork). That total task count is then spread across your reported weeks-until-move to produce a weekly task load, rounded up so you're never told to do a fractional task. Packing lead time scales with bedroom count too — roughly 1.2 weeks of packing per bedroom, floored at 2 weeks minimum, and capped so it can't exceed your actual timeline if your move window is short.

The critical deadline week (for utilities transfers, address changes, and a final walkthrough) is set to one week before moving day by default. Buffer days are calculated from whatever schedule slack remains after accounting for total tasks against total days available, capped at a week; a short timeline with a heavy task load can produce zero buffer days, which is the calculator's way of flagging that your schedule is tight. This is a planning heuristic, not a project management tool — it doesn't sequence individual tasks or know your personal circumstances, so treat the weekly task load and packing start week as guardrails to build your own list around, not a substitute for one.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Weeks Until Move to establish your planning horizon.
  2. Set the number of Bedrooms and indicate if it is a Long Distance Move.
  3. Indicate whether you Own Your Current Home (which adds sale-related tasks to the timeline).
  4. Review Total Tasks, Weekly Task Load, and when to Start Packing to stay on schedule.

What each input means

Weeks Until Move
How many weeks from now until your moving day. 8 weeks is ideal for a stress-free move.
Bedrooms
Number of bedrooms. More rooms means more packing tasks and a longer timeline.
Long Distance Move
Turn on for a long-distance move (adds research, address changes, and logistics tasks). Leave off for a local move under 100 miles.
Own Your Current Home
Turn on if you're a homeowner (adds tasks for repairs, staging, listing, and closing). Leave off if renting.

What each result means

Total Tasks
Total number of moving tasks to complete before move day.
Tasks Per Week
Average number of tasks to complete each week to stay on schedule.
Start Packing (Week #)
The week number when you should begin packing non-essential items.
Critical Deadline (Week #)
The week by which utilities, address changes, and final details must be done.
Buffer Days Available
Estimated cushion days in your schedule for unexpected delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a 1-bedroom apartment show fewer total tasks than a 4-bedroom house?

Total Tasks starts from a baseline of 15 universal tasks everyone faces, then adds 3 tasks per bedroom for packing. A 1-bedroom home adds 3 tasks (18 total before other factors), while a 4-bedroom home adds 12 (27 total), reflecting that more rooms genuinely means more packing work to plan for.

How much do the Long Distance and Own Your Current Home toggles change my task count?

Long Distance Move adds a flat 8 tasks (mover research, address changes, setting up utilities in a new state), and Own Your Current Home adds a flat 6 tasks (repairs, staging, listing, closing paperwork). Both are independent flat additions on top of your bedroom-based baseline, so a long-distance homeowner sees both bumps applied together.

Why might Buffer Days Available show as 0?

Buffer Days is calculated from whatever schedule slack remains after weighing your total task count against the total days in your timeline, then capped at 7 and floored at 0. If your task count is high relative to your weeks-until-move, that slack calculation can hit zero, which is the calculator's way of signaling that your moving schedule is tight and needs more time or fewer tasks.

Why does the packing start week depend on bedroom count rather than just weeks until move?

Packing Lead Weeks scales at roughly 1.2 weeks per bedroom, with a 2-week floor, because more bedrooms mean more items to pack and thus more lead time is needed regardless of how far out your move date is. That lead time is then subtracted from your total weeks-until-move (and can never exceed it) to set the actual week number you should start packing.
