Financial Detox Calculator
No-spend challenge savings from target duration.
About this calculator
Total Detox Savings is simply your combined daily discretionary spending — dining out, entertainment, shopping, and subscriptions added together — multiplied by Challenge Duration in days (lines 20-23). Challenge Duration has the largest effect on that total of any single input, since it scales the whole combined daily rate at once rather than just one category. Interest Saved on Debt is where this calculator gets a genuine, easy-to-miss ceiling: it multiplies your detox savings by the debt's monthly rate and by however many months remain in a 12-month window after the challenge ends (12 minus Challenge Duration in days divided by 30, floored at zero, lines 33-35). At the 30-day default that's 11 months of savings still available to apply, but stretching the challenge past 360 days leaves zero months remaining — Interest Saved on Debt drops all the way back to $0 even though Total Detox Savings keeps climbing, because the calculator assumes the payoff window closes exactly one year from today regardless of how long the detox itself runs.
Difficulty Score starts from a band based on your combined daily spending (lines 49-53), then adds a flat +1 if Challenge Duration exceeds 30 days, or +2 if it exceeds 60 — using "more than," not "at least," so a 30-day challenge itself gets no duration bonus even though it's the calculator's own default length (lines 56-57). Annualized Savings is calculated straight from your daily rates times 365 and never references Challenge Duration at all — it answers "what if this became permanent," a separate question from the detox itself. This tool assumes your daily spending estimates are accurate and doesn't track actual purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does running a longer no-spend challenge always save more on debt interest?
Only up to a point. Interest Saved on Debt depends on how many months remain in a fixed 12-month window after the challenge ends (line 34), so a longer challenge eventually leaves fewer months to apply the savings to. At this calculator's defaults, a 30-day challenge shows about $209 in interest saved, but stretching the same challenge to 360 days or more drives that figure down to exactly $0, even though total dollars saved keeps growing the whole time.
Why doesn't my 30-day challenge get the difficulty bonus mentioned in the calculator?
The duration bonus only applies once Challenge Duration is strictly more than 30 days, not equal to it (line 57) — a 30-day challenge, the calculator's own default, sits exactly on that boundary and gets no bonus. Push the duration to 31 days or beyond and Difficulty Score picks up a flat +1; beyond 60 days it picks up +2 instead, capped at a maximum score of 10.
Does Annualized Savings change if I set a shorter or longer challenge?
No — Annualized Savings is calculated only from your four daily spending rates times 365 (line 45) and never reads Challenge Duration at all. It's meant to answer a different question than the detox total: not "what does this challenge save," but "what would I save every year if these same daily cuts became permanent."
How is the money split between the four spending categories?
Each category's total is just that category's daily rate times Challenge Duration, independently of the others (lines 26-29) — Dining Out, Entertainment, Shopping, and Subscriptions don't interact or get reweighted against each other. Raising your daily dining estimate by 10% raises Dining Out Saved by exactly 10%, and moves Total Detox Savings by a smaller amount proportional to dining's share of your combined daily total.
If I invest my detox savings instead of applying them to debt, how is that growth calculated?
One-Year Invested Value multiplies Total Detox Savings by 1.07 once, a single 7% return (line 38). Five-Year Invested Value compounds that same 7% return five times in a row on the growing balance (lines 39-42), not five separate 7% additions to the original amount — which is why it comes out meaningfully higher than simply multiplying the one-year figure by five.
