Financial Values Clarifier Calculator

Priority ranking of financial values and goal alignment.

About this calculator

The calculator compares two separate percentage breakdowns of the same five life areas — security, freedom, family, growth, enjoyment. Ideal percentages come purely from your five 1-10 importance ratings divided by their sum (lines 34-38): rate two areas equally and they get equal ideal shares, regardless of what you actually spend. Actual percentages come from your five reported monthly dollar amounts divided by their sum (lines 41-46). Alignment Score starts at 100 and subtracts twice the average absolute gap between each area's ideal and actual percentage (lines 58-59), so a 10-point average gap costs 20 points of alignment.

Largest Misalignment simply flags whichever of the five areas has the biggest gap between ideal and actual share (lines 62-63) — it doesn't distinguish overspending relative to your stated values from underspending; either direction counts equally toward that area being flagged. Monthly Reallocation Needed sums how many dollars would have to move into or out of each category to make actual spending match ideal proportions exactly, then divides by two because every dollar that leaves one category is the same dollar arriving in another (lines 72-78). Security Spending has the largest effect of any single input on that reallocation total at this calculator's own defaults, more than Security Importance itself, because a dollar-amount input moves both the "actual" side of the gap directly while an importance rating only reshapes the "ideal" side indirectly through everyone else's share. This tool has no way to verify your reported spending is accurate or complete.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Rate the importance of each financial value (security, freedom, family, growth, enjoyment) on a 1–10 scale.
  2. Enter your actual monthly spending in each corresponding category.
  3. Review your Alignment Score — a higher score means your spending matches your stated values.
  4. Identify the Largest Misalignment to find where your behavior diverges most from your values.
  5. Use Monthly Reallocation Needed to set a concrete budget-shifting goal toward values alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does rating something as important guarantee it shows up as well-aligned?

No — importance only sets the Ideal percentage side of the comparison (lines 34-38). Alignment depends on whether your Actual spending percentage (line 41-46) matches that ideal. You can rate Family a 9 out of 10 and still show a large gap on it if your actual dollars going to family activities are proportionally much smaller or larger than that high rating implies relative to your other four categories.

If Largest Misalignment points to Security, does that mean I'm underspending on security?

Not necessarily. Largest Misalignment just identifies which of the five areas has the biggest absolute gap between its ideal and actual percentage (lines 49-63) — it doesn't say which direction. At this calculator's own defaults, Security is flagged as the largest misalignment specifically because you're spending a larger share on it than your importance rating implies you should, not a smaller one.

Why does changing my security spending move Monthly Reallocation Needed more than changing how important I say security is?

Because a spending dollar amount and an importance rating affect the gap through different paths. Security Spending changes the Actual percentage directly and by a large share, since it's compared against the fixed total of all five spending categories. Security Importance only changes the Ideal percentage indirectly, by shifting how the total importance sum gets divided among all five areas — a smaller, more diffuse effect.

Can Alignment Score ever go negative if my spending is very misaligned with my values?

No — it's floored at zero (line 59). The formula subtracts twice the average gap from 100, so a large enough average misalignment across the five categories would drive the raw result below zero, but the calculator clamps the displayed score at 0 rather than showing a negative alignment figure.
