Monthly Payment is dominated by Loan Balance: its ±10% span is about 20% of Monthly Payment, versus only roughly 15% for Loan Term and about 5% for Interest Rate at the default 5.5% rate. Total Interest Paid, by contrast, responds almost identically to Interest Rate (about 22%) and Loan Term (about 21%), with neither one a clear leader over the other, since both feed the same compounding calculation that produces Monthly Payment. This calculator does not model income-driven repayment plans, loan forgiveness, deferment, or capitalized interest — it assumes a single fixed rate applied every month from day one.

Does the loan balance affect how long it takes to pay off the loan?

Only Loan Term does at the default $0 Extra Monthly Payment — dial Loan Term down 10% and then up 10% from its default, and Payoff Time swings by exactly 20% end to end, while doing the same to Loan Balance or Interest Rate leaves it completely unchanged. That's because a fully-amortizing standard payment is built to retire the loan in exactly Loan Term times 12 months no matter what the balance or rate are, as long as no extra payment is being applied.

Why does Interest Saved show $0 even though I have a real loan balance and rate?

It stays exactly $0, regardless of the loan's balance, rate, or term. Interest Saved (Extra Payments) measures the benefit of the Extra Monthly Payment field specifically, and that field defaults to $0. Until you enter something above $0 there, this calculator has nothing extra to compare the standard payoff against, so the savings figure has nothing to report.

What drives the monthly payment amount the most?

Loan Balance, by a clear margin — its ±10% span is about 20% of Monthly Payment, versus roughly 15% for Loan Term and only about 5% for Interest Rate at the calculator's default 5.5% rate. Interest Rate's influence on the monthly figure grows at higher rates, but at these defaults it is the smallest of the three.

Is total interest paid driven mainly by the interest rate or the loan term?
