Dimensional Weight Calculator
Find billable shipping weight by comparing dimensional (volumetric) weight against actual weight, using your carrier's DIM factor.

Billable weight (lbs)
21.76
DIM billed? (1=yes)1
DIM surcharge (lbs)11.76

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter package outer dimensions: length, width, and height (inches or cm).
- Enter actual package weight (lbs or kg) and select the carrier (UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL).
- Read dimensional weight (DIM weight) using the carrier's DIM factor.
- The billable weight is the greater of actual weight and DIM weight — compare both.
- Reduce DIM charges by right-sizing packaging to minimize empty air space.
How the result changes with DIM factor (in³/lb)
| DIM factor (in³/lb) | DIM weight (lbs) | Billable weight (lbs) |
|---|---|---|
| 101 | 29.94 | 29.94 |
| 351 | 8.62 | 10 |
| 650 | 4.65 | 10 |
| 900 | 3.36 | 10 |
What each input means
- Length (in)
- Outer package length in inches.
- Width (in)
- Outer package width in inches.
- Height (in)
- Outer package height in inches.
- Actual weight (lbs)
- Actual scale weight of the package.
- DIM factor (in³/lb)
- Carrier DIM divisor in cubic inches per pound: 139 = UPS/FedEx domestic and international, 166 = USPS Priority Mail, 194–250 = regional carriers and LTL freight. Use your negotiated rate if you have one.
- Number of packages
- Total packages in the shipment.
What each result means
- DIM weight (lbs)
- Calculated dimensional weight = L x W x H / DIM factor.
- Billable weight (lbs)
- The greater of DIM weight or actual weight — this is what you pay for.
- DIM billed? (1=yes)
- 1 if DIM weight exceeds actual weight.
- DIM surcharge (lbs)
- Extra weight you are billed for beyond actual weight.
- DIM surcharge %
- Percentage overage due to DIM pricing.
- Cubic inches
- Total cubic inches of the package.
- Cubic feet
- Volume in cubic feet.
- Density (lbs/cu ft)
- Package density — important for freight class.
- Total billable (all pkgs)
- Sum of billable weights for the full shipment.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersLength (in) = 18, Width (in) = 14, Height (in) = 12, Actual weight (lbs) = 10 = 6 input(s) provided
- Calculate DIM weightDIM weight = cubicInches / dimFactor21.76 = 21.76
- Calculate Billable weightBillable weight = max(dimWeight, actualWeight)21.76 = 21.76
- Calculate DIM billed?1 = 1
- Calculate DIM surcharge11.76 = 11.76
