This calculator measures how much a value moved between two points, reporting both the raw change (new minus old) and that change expressed as a percentage of the original value. Percentage change responds to Original Value and New Value with almost identical strength, proportionally, at the calculator's default figures — a ten percent nudge to either field moves the percentage result by nearly the same amount — but the two fields pull the answer in opposite directions: raising the New Value while the Original Value stays fixed always raises the percentage change, since a bigger ending point means more growth to report, while raising the Original Value while the New Value stays fixed always lowers it, since the same absolute gap now represents a smaller share of a larger starting point. A positive percentage means the value grew; a negative one means it shrank. The header numbers keep that sign, and the calculator also offers separate absolute-value readouts for change and percentage change alongside the signed originals, for situations where only the size of the shift matters and not its direction. There are limits to what this page checks: dividing by an Original Value of exactly zero is mathematically undefined, since there is no percentage a nonzero change could represent relative to nothing — rather than reporting an error or an infinite result, the calculator silently returns a percentage change of exactly 0 in that case.

Dividing by the ORIGINAL value — not the new one, and not their average — is what makes this a percentage change rather than a percentage difference. Choosing the wrong base is the most common error with this formula, and it is why a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall does not return you to where you started.

Why do Original Value and New Value pull the percentage in opposite directions?
Raising the New Value while the Original Value stays put means a bigger ending point, which represents more relative growth, so the percentage climbs. Raising the Original Value while the New Value stays put means the same absolute change now sits on top of a larger starting figure, so that identical gap now represents a smaller share of the whole, and the percentage falls.
Which field has more influence on the result — Original Value or New Value?
At this calculator's default figures, the two are nearly indistinguishable in strength — a given percentage nudge to either field moves the percentage-change result by almost exactly the same proportional amount, just in opposite directions. Neither field reliably outweighs the other; which one matters more depends heavily on the particular numbers you enter.
What happens if I set the Original Value to 0?
Percentage change relative to zero has no real mathematical meaning, since any nonzero movement away from nothing cannot be expressed as a percentage of nothing. Rather than showing an error or an infinite value, the calculator falls back to reporting a percentage change of exactly 0 whenever the Original Value field is 0, so treat that particular reading with caution.
What's the difference between Percentage Change and Absolute % Change?
Percentage Change keeps its sign — positive for growth, negative for decline — so you can tell at a glance which direction the value moved. Absolute % Change strips that sign away and reports only the size of the swing, which is useful when you only care how much something moved, not whether it went up or down.
