Scores of 15-18 fall into the High Anxiety band (nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation), and 10-14 falls into Moderate Anxiety (behavioral management techniques).

The recommendation escalates with the total anxiety score: nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation is suggested at the High Anxiety band, while IV sedation or general anesthesia is suggested only at the Severe Anxiety / Dental Phobia band (19+). They are related but not identical -- the anxiety category (Low, Moderate, High, Severe) is a clinical grouping used to guide the sedation recommendation, while the percentile is a rough estimate of how a given total score compares to the broader population's MDAS scores, anchored only to the one published UK statistic that a score of 19+ sits at roughly the 88th percentile.
