How to Use This Calculator
- Select the Tooth position (1–6): upper/lower primary molars or first permanent molars.
- Measure and enter the Mesiodistal width in mm using calipers on the prepared tooth — measure at the widest contact point.
- Enter the Proximal reduction per side (mm) performed during preparation and the Occlusal reduction (mm) for crown seating.
- Review the Recommended crown size (2–7), plus the Try size down and Try size up options to have adjacent sizes ready at chairside.
- Note the Nominal crown height (mm), Estimated crimping needed (mm), Total proximal reduction (mm), and Fit assessment (0 = likely tight, 1 = good fit, 2 = likely loose) to guide final seating.
How the result changes with Mesiodistal width (mm)
| Mesiodistal width (mm) | Recommended crown size |
|---|---|
| 5 | 2 |
| 7.5 | 6 |
| 11 | 7 |
| 13 | 7 |
What each input means
- Tooth position
- 1=Upper 1st primary molar, 2=Upper 2nd primary molar, 3=Lower 1st primary molar, 4=Lower 2nd primary molar, 5=Upper 1st permanent molar, 6=Lower 1st permanent molar.
- Mesiodistal width (mm)
- Measured mesiodistal width of the prepared tooth in millimeters.
- Proximal reduction per side (mm)
- Amount of enamel/dentin reduced on each proximal surface.
- Occlusal reduction (mm)
- Amount of occlusal reduction for crown seating.
What each result means
- Recommended crown size
- Best-fit SSC size number (2–7).
- Try size down
- One size smaller for trial fitting.
- Try size up
- One size larger for trial fitting.
- Nominal crown height (mm)
- Typical crown height for this tooth position.
- Estimated crimping needed (mm)
- Approximate marginal crimping adjustment.
- Total proximal reduction (mm)
- Combined reduction from both proximal surfaces.
- Fit assessment
- 0=Likely tight (size up), 1=Good fit, 2=Likely loose (size down).
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersTooth position = 3, Mesiodistal width (mm) = 7, Proximal reduction per side (mm) = 0.5, Occlusal reduction (mm) = 1.5 = 4 input(s) provided
- Calculate Recommended crown sizeRecommended crown size = 25 = 5
- Calculate Try size downTry size down = max(2, crownSize - 1)4 = 4
- Calculate Try size upTry size up = min(7, crownSize + 1)6 = 6
