How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select the Decon Solution Type (1=Soap/Water through 5=Specialized) based on the contaminant identified in your site assessment.
  2. Enter the Solution Volume (gallons) needed for all decon stations and the Target Concentration (%) of active agent.
  3. Choose the Contaminant Type (1=Organic, 2=Inorganic, 3=Biological, 4=Radiological) to determine contact time and rinse cycles.
  4. Review Agent Needed (fl oz) and Water Needed (gallons) to prepare the correct proportions for each decon station.
  5. Check Contact Time (min) and Rinse Cycles to ensure personnel remain in the decon corridor long enough for effective decontamination.
  6. Use Total Solution w/ Rinses (gal) and Estimated Agent Cost to stock and budget decon supplies before the operation.

What each input means

Decon Solution Type
1=Soap & Water, 2=Bleach, 3=Baking Soda, 4=TSP, 5=Specialized.
Solution Volume (gallons)
Total gallons of decon solution needed.
Contaminant Type
1=Organic, 2=Inorganic, 3=Biological, 4=Radiological.
Target Concentration (%)
Desired concentration percentage of active agent.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Decon Solution Type = 2, Solution Volume (gallons) = 10, Contaminant Type = 1, Target Concentration (%) = 1 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Agent Needed
    Agent Needed
    12.8 = 12.8
  3. Calculate Contact Time
    10 = 10
  4. Calculate Agent Needed
    Agent Needed
    0.8 = 0.8
  5. Calculate Water Needed
    Water Needed
    9.9 = 9.9
