Ammunition Cost Comparison Calculator
Per-round cost across calibers and manufacturers.
About this calculator
This calculator projects your shooting costs by chaining four straightforward unit conversions together: box price divides by rounds per box to get a per-round cost, that per-round cost multiplies by rounds fired per session to get a session cost, the session cost multiplies by how many sessions you shoot per month to get a monthly figure, and the monthly figure multiplies by 12 to project an annual cost. Because every step is a direct multiplication or division with no diminishing returns or volume discounts built in, the relationship between any single input and your annual cost is perfectly linear — doubling your rounds-per-session or your sessions-per-month exactly doubles your projected annual spend, all else held equal.
The reloading comparison works the same way: if you enter a per-round handloading cost, the calculator subtracts it from the factory per-round cost to get a savings-per-round figure, then multiplies that by your projected annual round count to estimate total annual savings from reloading instead of buying factory ammunition — leaving that field at zero (the default) simply skips the comparison entirely, since a per-round handload cost of $0 isn't a meaningful real input. What this calculator does not account for is real-world price variability — factory ammunition prices fluctuate significantly with commodity input costs (brass, lead, copper, propellant) and market demand, reloading also carries upfront equipment costs this model ignores entirely, and neither of those is something a single 'price per box' snapshot can capture.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the Price per Box and Rounds per Box for your ammunition.
- Set Rounds per Range Session and Sessions per Month.
- Optionally enter Reload Cost per Round if you handload.
- Review Cost per Round, Cost per Session, Monthly Cost, and Annual Cost.
- Check Annual Reloading Savings to evaluate whether handloading is worth the investment.
How the result changes with Rounds per box
| Rounds per box | Cost per round ($) |
|---|---|
| 25 | $0.80 |
| 38 | $0.53 |
| 75 | $0.27 |
| 125 | $0.16 |
What each input means
- Price per box ($)
- Retail price for one box of ammunition.
- Rounds per box
- Number of cartridges in one box (e.g. 20, 25, 50).
- Rounds per range session
- Average number of rounds fired per practice or competition session.
- Sessions per month
- How many times you shoot per month.
- Reload cost per round ($)
- Cost per round if handloading (set to 0 if not reloading).
What each result means
- Cost per round ($)
- Factory ammo cost for a single cartridge.
- Cost per session ($)
- Total ammunition cost for one range session.
- Monthly ammo cost ($)
- Total monthly spending on ammunition.
- Annual ammo cost ($)
- Projected yearly ammunition expenditure.
- Annual rounds fired
- Total cartridges consumed per year.
- Boxes needed per year
- Number of boxes to purchase annually.
- Annual reloading savings ($)
- Money saved per year by handloading vs. factory ammo.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters5 parametersPrice per box ($) = 20, Rounds per box = 50, Rounds per range session = 100, Sessions per month = 4, Reload cost per round ($) = 0 = 5 input(s) provided
- Calculate Cost per roundCost per round = pricePerBox / roundsPerBox0.4 = $0.4
- Calculate Cost per sessionCost per session = costPerRound * roundsPerSession40 = $40
- Calculate Monthly ammo costMonthly ammo cost = costPerSession * sessionsPerMonth160 = $160

Frequently Asked Questions
Does shooting twice as often really cost exactly twice as much here?
Yes — every relationship in this calculator is a direct multiplication with no bulk-pricing curve or diminishing cost per additional round, so doubling either your rounds fired per session or your sessions per month exactly doubles the projected monthly and annual totals, holding everything else constant. Real-world ammunition retailers sometimes offer case-quantity discounts that would break this linearity, but this calculator does not model that.
Why does leaving Reload Cost per Round at zero seem to disable the reloading comparison?
A reload cost of exactly $0 per round isn't a realistic input — even handloading with owned components has a non-zero per-round material cost — so the calculator treats zero as 'not reloading' and simply reports zero annual reloading savings rather than implying reloading is free. Enter your actual per-round component cost (powder, primer, bullet, and a share of brass if you're not reusing your own) to see a real comparison.
Does this calculator account for the upfront cost of reloading equipment?
No — the reloading savings figure only compares the ongoing per-round cost of handloading against factory ammunition prices, not the one-time cost of a reloading press, dies, scale, and other equipment, which can run from a few hundred to well over a thousand dollars depending on setup. Divide that upfront cost by your annual reloading savings to estimate a rough payback period.
Why might my actual annual ammo spending differ from this projection?
This calculator assumes a constant price per box and a constant shooting frequency across the full year, but real ammunition prices fluctuate with commodity costs and market demand, and most shooters' practice frequency varies seasonally rather than staying perfectly steady — treat the annual figure as a planning estimate at today's prices and your average pace, not a guaranteed forecast.
