How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your canoe's rated weight capacity in lbs (from the manufacturer's spec sheet).
- Input the weight of paddler 1 in kg and paddler 2 in kg (or 0 for solo paddling).
- Enter total gear weight in kg for all packs, coolers, and equipment.
- Input the canoe's own weight in kg.
- Read Remaining Capacity and Freeboard to assess how much reserve you have before the gunwales get dangerously close to the waterline.
- Check Safety Rating — aim for the green zone by keeping total load below 80% of rated capacity.

What each input means
- Canoe Capacity
- Maximum load capacity of your canoe (not including the canoe's own weight). Found on the capacity plate or manufacturer specs.
- Paddler 1 Weight
- Weight of the stern (rear) paddler. This is typically the heavier paddler for better trim.
- Paddler 2 Weight
- Weight of the bow (front) paddler. Enter 0 for solo paddling.
- Gear Weight
- Total weight of all gear, food, water, coolers, and supplies. Weigh bags before loading for accuracy.
- Canoe Weight
- Weight of the canoe itself. Used for total transport weight and freeboard estimation. Aluminum ~30-37kg, composite ~16-25kg.
What each result means
- Total Load
- Combined weight of all paddlers and gear (excluding the canoe itself).
- Capacity Used
- Percentage of the canoe's rated load capacity in use. Stay under 85% for calm water, 70% for rough conditions.
- Remaining Capacity
- How much additional weight you can safely add before reaching the rated capacity.
- Est. Freeboard
- Estimated distance from waterline to gunwale. Below 15cm is risky in any conditions; below 8cm is dangerous.
- Safety Rating
- 1 = Safe (<70%), 2 = Caution (70-85%), 3 = Risky (85-100%), 4 = Overloaded (>100%).
