How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the Putt Distance in feet.
- Set the Slope Grade in percent and Slope Direction in degrees (0 = directly uphill, 90 = side slope).
- Enter the Stimpmeter Speed (ball roll distance in feet from a standard ramp release).
- Review Break Amount in inches, Aim Point Offset, Effective Distance, and recommended Overshoot.
- Use Elevation Change and Side Slope to understand how combined slopes affect break.
How the result changes with Putt Distance (feet)
| Putt Distance (feet) | Break Amount (inches) |
|---|---|
| 11 | 13.2 |
| 36 | 43.2 |
| 65 | 78 |
| 90 | 108 |
What each input means
- Putt Distance (feet)
- Distance from ball to hole in feet.
- Slope Grade (%)
- Slope steepness as a percentage. Most greens are 1-4%.
- Slope Direction (degrees)
- Direction of downslope relative to putt line: 0=uphill, 90=right-to-left, 180=downhill, 270=left-to-right.
- Stimpmeter Speed (ft)
- Green speed rating. Slow: 7-8, Medium: 9-10, Fast: 11-12, Tour: 12-14.
What each result means
- Break Amount (inches)
- Total break the ball will experience from side slope.
- Aim Point Offset (inches)
- How far to aim away from the hole to compensate for break.
- Effective Distance (feet)
- Putt distance adjusted for elevation — uphill plays longer.
- Target Overshoot (inches)
- How far past the hole to aim if the ball misses, adjusted for slope and speed.
- Elevation Change (inches)
- Total elevation change along the putt line.
- Side Slope (%)
- Cross-slope component affecting break.
- Break Direction
- Direction the putt will break.
- Speed Advice
- Recommended stroke pace based on slope.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersPutt Distance (feet) = 20, Slope Grade (%) = 2, Slope Direction (degrees) = 90, Stimpmeter Speed (ft) = 10 = 4 input(s) provided
- Calculate Break AmountBreak Amount = abs(sideComponent) * puttDistance * stimpFactor * gravityEffect24 = 24
- Calculate Aim Point Offset24 = 24
- Calculate Effective DistanceEffective Distance = puttDistance * elevationFactor20 = 20
