This calculator converts a running pace given in minutes and seconds over a chosen distance into the two other most common ways runners describe effort: pace per kilometer, pace per mile, and speed in both km/h and mph. The conversion runs through total elapsed seconds -- your entered minutes and seconds combine into total seconds, divide by the distance entered (in kilometers) to get seconds-per-kilometer, and that figure is multiplied by the kilometer-to-mile conversion factor (1.60934) to get seconds-per-mile, since a mile covers more ground than a kilometer and therefore takes proportionally longer at the same pace. Speed is simply the reciprocal relationship: 3,600 seconds in an hour divided by seconds-per-kilometer gives km/h directly, and dividing that by 1.60934 converts it to mph. The Distance field lets you enter a pace measured over any distance, not just exactly 1 km or 1 mile -- enter the time it took to cover, say, a 3.1-mile (5K) segment and this calculator normalizes it back down to a standard per-km or per-mile pace automatically. Frequently Asked Questions

How does entering a different Distance value change the conversion?

The Distance field tells the calculator what distance your entered minutes and seconds actually cover, in kilometers. Total elapsed seconds is divided by that distance to get seconds-per-kilometer, so entering a larger distance for the same time normalizes down to a faster per-kilometer pace (and higher speed), while a smaller distance for the same time normalizes to a slower pace -- the same time spread over less ground implies a slower per-unit-distance rate.

Why is pace per mile always a larger number than pace per kilometer at the same speed?

A mile (1.60934 km) is longer than a kilometer, so covering it at any given speed takes proportionally longer than covering just one kilometer. This calculator derives pace-per-mile by multiplying pace-per-kilometer by 1.60934, so the mile pace is always about 61% larger in raw seconds than the kilometer pace for the same underlying speed -- it's the same effort expressed over a longer distance, not a different, slower pace.

What's the relationship between the Minutes/Seconds inputs and the resulting speed?

Minutes and Seconds combine into total elapsed time for the distance entered, and speed is derived from that time as an inverse relationship: a longer entered time for the same distance means a slower calculated speed in both km/h and mph, while a shorter time for the same distance means a faster speed. Doubling the entered time (holding distance fixed) exactly halves the resulting speed.

Can I use this calculator to check a 5K or 10K split against a target pace?
