Speed Converter

Convert between mph, km/h, m/s, knots, and feet per second instantly.

Whatever unit you pick, your figure is first pushed into metres per second, then pulled back out into all five columns at once and rounded to four decimal places. The factors are worth knowing. A mile per hour is exactly 0.44704 m/s, which follows from the 1959 agreement fixing the international mile at 1609.344 metres. A foot per second is exactly 0.3048 m/s. The knot is the odd one: it is one international nautical mile of 1852 metres per hour, or 0.5144444... m/s repeating, and this engine stores it truncated as 0.514444, so a knot reading drifts by roughly one part in a million — invisible at chart-plotting scale, but it is a truncation and not an exact factor. Two things are outside its scope. There is no Mach column, because the speed of sound is not a constant and depends on air temperature, so no single factor could be honest. And speed here is a scalar magnitude, with the input floored at zero: no heading, no wind vector, and therefore no way to separate airspeed from ground speed.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Speed value to convert.
  2. Select the From unit: mph, km/h, m/s, Knots, or ft/s.
  3. Review all equivalent speed values — mph, km/h, m/s, Knots, and ft/s — displayed simultaneously.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Speed = 60, From = 0 = 2 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Miles per hour
    Miles per hour = round((mps / 0.44704) * 10000) / 10000
    60 = 60
  3. Calculate Kilometers per hour
    Kilometers per hour = round((mps * 3.6) * 10000) / 10000
    96.5606 = 96.5606
  4. Calculate Meters per second
    Meters per second
    26.8224 = 26.8224
  5. Calculate Knots
    Knots = round((mps / 0.514444) * 10000) / 10000
    52.1386 = 52.1386

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a knot the same thing as a mile per hour?

No, and treating them as equal costs about fifteen percent. A knot is one nautical mile per hour and works out to roughly 1.1508 statute mph, because the nautical mile is 1852 metres against the statute mile's 1609.344.

Why is there no Mach number?

Because Mach is a ratio to the local speed of sound, and that speed falls as air gets colder — near 340 m/s at sea level but closer to 295 m/s in the stratosphere. A fixed conversion factor would be wrong at every altitude but one.

Can I enter a negative speed to show travel in reverse?

The Speed field is floored at zero, so negatives are rejected. Everything on this page is a scalar magnitude with no direction attached, which is why it also cannot combine a headwind with an airspeed to give you a ground speed.

How precise are the results?

Each column is rounded to four decimal places after the conversion, so at everyday road and marine speeds you are seeing far more digits than the arithmetic meaningfully supports. Only the knot factor itself is approximate; the mph and ft/s factors are exact by definition.
