Practice Routine Planner Calculator
Get a structured golf practice session plan with time allocation for putting, chipping, irons, and driver based on your handicap and weakness.
About this calculator
Rather than splitting practice time evenly across the four skill areas, this calculator starts from a baseline allocation tuned to your handicap tier. Handicaps of 12 and under (the low and mid tiers, which share the same baseline) get the heaviest default lean toward putting and chipping (30%/25% each) since short game has the highest scoring return on investment for those players. Handicaps from 13 through 24 step back to an even split across all four areas (25% each) rather than carrying that short-game lean forward, and handicaps above 24 shift to a more fundamentals-first mix weighted slightly toward irons and driver to build a repeatable full swing first. It then takes whichever single skill you flag as your weakness — driving, iron play, short game, or putting — and boosts that area's allocation by a flat 15 percentage points, pulling that boost evenly from the other three areas so the total still sums to 100%, then renormalizes and converts the percentages into actual minutes based on your available session length.
The efficiency score is deliberately handicap-aware rather than one-size-fits-all: for higher handicaps (above 15) it rewards sessions that lean into short game, since that's genuinely the highest-value practice for that skill level; for mid handicaps it rewards balance across all four areas equally; and for low handicaps it simply rewards focused, deliberate practice on the declared weakness, since a skilled player consistently attacking one weak spot tends to see the biggest scoring gains. The drill recommendation is a fixed suggestion tied to your selected weakness, not a personalized diagnosis — it's a starting point (like gate-drill lag putting or up-and-down practice from varied lies) rather than a substitute for actual instruction. Keep in mind the underlying percentages are general guidelines drawn from common teaching wisdom, not a formula fit to your specific swing data, so adjust the plan if your own experience says a different mix works better for your game.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the baseline percentages change at handicap 12 and 24 instead of scaling smoothly?
The calculator uses three discrete handicap tiers, not a continuous formula: 12-and-under gets a 30/25/25/20 split leaning toward putting and chipping, 13–24 gets an even 25/25/25/25 split, and above 24 gets a 25/20/30/25 split weighted toward irons and driver to build full-swing fundamentals first. So two golfers at handicap 12 and 13 get noticeably different baselines even though their skill levels are close, because they fall on opposite sides of a tier boundary.
How much does selecting a weakness actually change my time allocation?
Your selected weakness area gets a flat 15 percentage-point boost added to its baseline share, and that 15 points is pulled evenly (5 points each) from the other three areas before everything is renormalized back to 100%. So the weakness boost is a fixed adjustment on top of your handicap-tier baseline, not a full re-derivation of the split.
Why does the Efficiency Score formula differ depending on my handicap?
The calculator treats different practice strategies as optimal at different skill levels: above handicap 15, the score rewards a higher combined putting-plus-chipping share (short game has the best return for less skilled players); between 6 and 15 it rewards balance across all four areas equally; and at 5 or below it simply rewards committing extra time to your declared weakness, since focused practice tends to pay off most for already-skilled players. That's why the same session might score differently for two golfers with different handicaps.
Is the recommended drill for my weakness personalized to my swing?
No — it's a fixed suggestion tied only to which of the four weakness categories you select (for example, gate-drill lag putting for a putting weakness, or up-and-down practice from varied lies for short game). It's meant as a generic starting point drawn from common teaching practice, not a diagnosis of your specific swing fault, so pair it with real instruction if you want a more targeted fix.
