Race Day Equipment Checklist Calculator

Score your triathlon race-day gear readiness across swim, bike, run, transition, and nutrition categories.

About this calculator

This calculator turns a simple self-report — how many of the recommended items you have ready in each of five categories — into an overall readiness percentage out of 21 total tracked items (5 swim, 5 bike, 4 run, 3 transition, 4 nutrition), plus a readiness percentage for each category individually so you can see exactly where the gaps are. Beyond the raw checklist score, it estimates the total weight and replacement cost of your packed gear by applying a flat average weight and price per item within each category (for example, each "bike item" you mark ready is assumed to average 400g and $400, covering things like a helmet or shoes even though any single item's real weight and cost varies widely) — so those two figures are rough ballpark estimates for travel and insurance planning, not itemized totals.

The one figure worth watching closely is "critical items missing," which only counts shortfalls in your bike and swim categories specifically (bike gear like a helmet and shoes, and swim gear like a wetsuit, are treated as closer to mandatory), so a missing race belt or nutrition item won't show up there even though it can still cost you time or comfort on race day. This tool is a packing-list sanity check, not a race-legality verification — always confirm your actual mandatory gear list against your specific race's athlete guide, since requirements (wetsuit legality by water temperature, helmet certification, etc.) vary by event and governing body.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Rate how many items you have ready in each category: Swim (0-5), Bike (0-5), Run (0-4), Transition (0-3), and Nutrition (0-4).
  2. Review your overall Readiness Score percentage and readiness by category.
  3. Check Critical Items Missing to identify any mandatory gear (helmet, shoes) still unpacked.
  4. Use Estimated Gear Weight and Gear Cost Estimate for travel and insurance planning.
  5. Aim for 100% readiness at least the day before race check-in.

What each input means

Swim items ready (0-5)
Swim gear packed: wetsuit, goggles (+ spare), swim cap, anti-chafe lubricant, ear plugs. Count how many you have ready.
Bike items ready (0-5)
Bike gear packed: helmet (mandatory), bike shoes, bike (checked/tuned), flat repair kit, nutrition mount/storage.
Run items ready (0-4)
Run gear packed: running shoes, race belt with number, hat or visor, sunglasses.
Transition items ready (0-3)
Transition gear: towel for T1 spot, body glide/anti-chafe, elastic band setup for shoes.
Nutrition items ready (0-4)
Nutrition packed: gels/bars, electrolyte drink mix, filled water bottles, special needs bag (for 70.3/Ironman).

What each result means

Readiness score (%)
Overall gear readiness as a percentage of all recommended items.
Items ready
Total number of gear items you have packed and ready.
Items missing
Number of recommended items not yet packed.
Swim readiness (%)
Percentage of swim gear ready.
Bike readiness (%)
Percentage of bike gear ready.
Run readiness (%)
Percentage of run gear ready.
Transition readiness (%)
Percentage of transition gear ready.
Nutrition readiness (%)
Percentage of nutrition items ready.
Estimated gear weight (kg)
Approximate total weight of your packed gear.
Gear cost estimate ($)
Approximate replacement cost for your packed gear items.
Critical items missing
Number of critical/mandatory items still missing (helmet, shoes, etc.).

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Swim items ready (0-5) = 3, Bike items ready (0-5) = 4, Run items ready (0-4) = 3, Transition items ready (0-3) = 2 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Readiness score
    Readiness score
    71 = 71
  3. Calculate Items ready
    Items ready = swimItems + bikeItems + runItems + transitionItems + nutritionItems
    15 = 15
  4. Calculate Items missing
    Items missing
    6 = 6

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does "critical items missing" only look at my bike and swim categories?

The calculator treats bike gear (helmet, shoes) and swim gear (wetsuit and related essentials) as the closest things to mandatory race-day equipment, so it specifically counts shortfalls in those two categories — 5 minus your bike items ready, plus any swim shortfall below 3. A missing race belt or nutrition item lowers your overall readiness score but won't appear in this critical count, even though it can still cost you time or comfort.

How is the overall readiness percentage calculated?

It totals the items you've marked ready across all five categories — swim, bike, run, transition, nutrition — out of 21 possible items, then expresses that as a percentage. Each category also gets its own percentage calculated the same way against its own item count, so you can see whether a low overall score is driven by one weak category or spread evenly across several.

Why are the weight and cost estimates the same flat amount per item within a category, regardless of which specific item it is?

The calculator doesn't track individual gear items, only how many items you've checked off within each category, so it applies a single average weight and price per category — for example, 400g and $400 per "bike item," meant to represent things like a helmet or shoes on average. That makes the totals useful for rough travel-weight and insurance-replacement planning, but not an itemized accounting of any specific piece of gear.

Does hitting 100% readiness guarantee I have everything my specific race requires?

No — this checklist reflects general triathlon gear categories, not any single race's official mandatory equipment list. Requirements like wetsuit legality by water temperature or helmet certification standards vary by event and governing body, so always cross-check your packed gear against your specific race's athlete guide before race day.
