How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the height of the wall or pitch in meters.
  2. Input the anchor setback — the horizontal distance from the wall to where your anchor is placed.
  3. Specify any extra rope needed for knots, anchoring, and belay setup (typically 5–10 m).
  4. Select single or half/twin rope system, as this affects how much rope you need to lower a full pitch.
  5. Read Minimum Rope Length to safely complete the route and lower back to the ground.
  6. Use the Recommended Standard Length to choose the nearest commercially available rope (60 m, 70 m, etc.).

What each input means

Route Height
Vertical distance from the base to the top anchor of the route in meters.
Anchor Setback
Horizontal or additional distance from the top of the wall to the anchor. Add extra for traversing routes.
Knot Allowance
Rope consumed by knots at both ends (figure-eight tie-in and stopper knot). Typically 2-4 meters total.
Safety Margin
Additional rope buffer for safety. 5 meters is standard; increase for unfamiliar routes or rope drag situations.
