How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the height of the wall or pitch in meters.
- Input the anchor setback — the horizontal distance from the wall to where your anchor is placed.
- Specify any extra rope needed for knots, anchoring, and belay setup (typically 5–10 m).
- Select single or half/twin rope system, as this affects how much rope you need to lower a full pitch.
- Read Minimum Rope Length to safely complete the route and lower back to the ground.
- Use the Recommended Standard Length to choose the nearest commercially available rope (60 m, 70 m, etc.).

What each input means
- Route Height
- Vertical distance from the base to the top anchor of the route in meters.
- Anchor Setback
- Horizontal or additional distance from the top of the wall to the anchor. Add extra for traversing routes.
- Knot Allowance
- Rope consumed by knots at both ends (figure-eight tie-in and stopper knot). Typically 2-4 meters total.
- Safety Margin
- Additional rope buffer for safety. 5 meters is standard; increase for unfamiliar routes or rope drag situations.
