Stall Bedding Calculator

Estimate bedding volume, bags needed, and monthly cost for horse stalls based on stall size, bedding type, and cleaning schedule.

About this calculator

This calculator estimates bedding volume, monthly bag or bale count, and monthly cost for a horse stall from four inputs: Stall Width, Stall Depth, Bedding Type, and Full Change Frequency. Initial Fill Volume and Daily Top-Off depend only on stall floor area (Stall Width times Stall Depth) and Bedding Type -- each bedding type has its own typical fill depth (6 inches for wood shavings, 8 for straw, 3 for pellets, since pellets expand once wetted) and its own daily consumption rate as a fraction of that fill volume. Full Change Frequency has NO effect on either of those two figures: how deep you fill the stall and how much you top it off daily are purely functions of stall size and bedding type, not how often you strip everything out.

Full Change Frequency instead determines how many complete strip-and-refill cycles happen each month, which combines with daily top-off to set Monthly Bags Needed and Monthly Cost -- a shorter change interval means more full changes per month and a higher total bedding volume consumed, all else equal. Bag and bale sizes, and per-bag costs, are fixed per bedding type (roughly 8 cu ft per shavings bag at $7, 20 cu ft per straw bale at $8, 2.5 cu ft per pellet bag at $6) rather than something you can adjust. This model doesn't account for bedding compaction over time, seasonal usage changes (more bedding needed in cold weather for warmth), or price variation by region and supplier.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Stall Width and Stall Depth (ft) to calculate the stall floor area.
  2. Select Bedding Type (Wood Shavings, Straw, or Pelleted Bedding).
  3. Set Full Change Frequency (days) — how often you strip and replace all bedding.
  4. Review Initial Fill Volume, Daily Top-Off, and Monthly Bags Needed.
  5. Compare bedding types on cost, absorbency, and dust levels using the Monthly Cost output.

How the result changes with Stall Width

20120 cu ft114 bags

What each input means

Stall Width
Interior width of the stall.
Stall Depth
Interior depth of the stall.
Bedding Type
Type of bedding material affects depth and cost.
Full Change Frequency
How often you strip and replace all bedding.

What each result means

Initial Fill Volume
Volume needed for one complete bedding fill.
Daily Top-Off
Daily bedding added to maintain depth.
Monthly Bags Needed
Total bags or bales needed per month.
Monthly Cost
Estimated monthly bedding expense.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Stall Width = 12, Stall Depth = 12, Bedding Type = 1, Full Change Frequency = 7 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Initial Fill Volume
    Initial Fill Volume
    72 = 72
  3. Calculate Monthly Bags Needed
    Monthly Bags Needed
    69 = 69
  4. Calculate Daily Top-Off

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't Full Change Frequency affect Initial Fill Volume?

Initial Fill Volume is how much bedding it takes to fill the stall to the correct depth for your chosen Bedding Type, which is entirely a function of Stall Width, Stall Depth, and the bedding's typical fill depth -- it doesn't matter whether you plan to strip and replace that fill weekly or monthly, the volume needed for one complete fill stays the same.

Why do stall dimensions matter so much to bedding volume?

Initial Fill Volume and Daily Top-Off both scale directly with stall floor area (Stall Width times Stall Depth), so doubling either dimension roughly doubles the bedding volume needed at the same fill depth -- larger stalls need proportionally more bedding regardless of bedding type or change schedule.

How does Bedding Type change the results?

Each bedding type carries its own fill depth, daily consumption percentage, bag or bale size, and per-unit cost -- wood shavings fill to about 6 inches, straw to about 8 inches (loosely packed), and pellets to only about 3 inches because they expand substantially once wetted, so switching bedding types changes both the volume needed and the number of bags or bales that volume translates to.

Why does a shorter Full Change Frequency increase Monthly Bags Needed?

A shorter Full Change Frequency means more complete strip-and-refill cycles happen every month, and each full change consumes a full Initial Fill Volume on top of the ongoing Daily Top-Off, so more frequent full changes add up to more total bedding volume and more bags or bales purchased per month.

What doesn't this calculator account for?

It doesn't account for bedding compaction that reduces effective depth over time between changes, seasonal usage increases in cold weather when horses spend more time stalled, regional price and availability differences for shavings, straw, or pellets, or losses from spoilage and improper storage.
