VAT Calculator

Calculate Value Added Tax (VAT) for any amount. Add VAT to a net price or remove VAT from a gross price to find the tax-exclusive amount.

About this calculator

This calculator applies a flat VAT rate to an amount in one of two directions, chosen by Calculation Type: "Add VAT" treats the amount you enter as the net (pre-tax) price and computes Gross Amount as amount times (1 plus VAT Rate), with VAT Amount as amount times VAT Rate; "Remove VAT" treats the amount as the gross (tax-inclusive) price and instead divides it by (1 plus VAT Rate) to back out Net Amount, with VAT Amount as the difference between the two. Amount is the input that drives every dollar figure -- it dominates Gross Amount because in both modes Gross Amount scales directly with amount (either amount itself in Remove mode, or amount times a fixed multiplier in Add mode), while VAT Rate only nudges Gross Amount. VAT Rate and Amount move VAT Amount by an identical share at the default 20% rate, since VAT Amount is a plain product of the two in Add mode.

Effective VAT Rate is the one output where Amount plays no role at all: because VAT Amount and Net Amount both scale with amount in lockstep, their ratio always reduces algebraically to VAT Rate itself, in either calculation mode, so Effective VAT Rate simply reports back the rate you entered. This is a single flat-rate model -- it does not handle reduced VAT rates on specific goods, zero-rated or exempt categories, or multi-jurisdiction VAT registration thresholds.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the dollar or currency amount.
  2. Enter the VAT rate applicable in your country (EU rates range from 17-27%).
  3. Choose the calculation type: 'Add VAT' if you have the net price and want the gross price, or 'Remove VAT' to extract the VAT from a total price.

What each input means

Amount
Enter the price before or after VAT depending on calculation type.
VAT Rate
Standard VAT rates: UK 20%, EU 15-27%, Canada GST 5%.
Calculation Type
Choose whether to add VAT to a net price or extract VAT from a gross price.

How this is calculated

Formula

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + VAT Rate). Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + VAT Rate). VAT Amount = Gross - Net.

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Amount = 100, VAT Rate = 20, Calculation Type = 0 = 3 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Gross Amount
    Gross Amount
    120 = $120
  3. Calculate Net Amount
    Net Amount
    100 = $100
  4. Calculate VAT Amount
    VAT Amount
    20 = $20

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Effective VAT Rate always match the VAT Rate I entered?

Effective VAT Rate is computed as (VAT Amount / Net Amount) x 100. In Add VAT mode, VAT Amount is amount times VAT Rate and Net Amount is just amount, so the ratio reduces exactly to VAT Rate. In Remove VAT mode both VAT Amount and Net Amount are divided by the same (1 + VAT Rate) factor, which cancels out in the ratio -- so the amount you enter never changes this output, only VAT Rate does.

What's the difference between 'Add VAT' and 'Remove VAT'?

Add VAT treats your entered amount as the net, pre-tax price and calculates the gross price by multiplying it by (1 + VAT Rate). Remove VAT treats the entered amount as the gross, tax-inclusive price and divides by (1 + VAT Rate) to find the net price -- useful when you have a receipt total and need to know how much was tax versus the underlying price.

Does a higher VAT Rate always increase the Gross Amount?

In Add VAT mode, yes -- Gross Amount is amount times (1 + VAT Rate), so raising the rate raises the gross price. In Remove VAT mode, Gross Amount is set directly to the amount you entered and does not change with VAT Rate at all; raising the rate there instead increases how much of that fixed gross figure gets classified as VAT Amount, shrinking Net Amount.

What VAT or GST rates does this calculator support?

Any flat percentage from 0% to 100% -- there's no hardcoded list of country rates, though the helper text on VAT Rate cites the UK's standard 20%, the EU's typical 15-27% range, and Canada's 5% GST as reference points. Enter your jurisdiction's actual rate; this tool does not look up or update rates automatically.
