  2. Enter your Download Speed and select the speed unit (Mbps or Gbps) from your ISP plan or a speed test.
  3. The Download Time result shows days, hours, minutes, and seconds for that transfer.
  4. Consult the Speed Comparison table to see how long the same file would take on different connection types.
  5. Use Total Seconds for programmatic calculations or SLA planning.

What each input means

File Size
Size of the file.
File Size Unit
Unit for the file size.

How this is calculated

Formula

Download Time (seconds) = File Size (Mb) ÷ Speed (Mbps). Note: 1 byte = 8 bits. ISPs advertise speed in Mbps (bits), files are measured in MB/GB (bytes).

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    File Size = 4.7, File Size Unit = 1, Download Speed = 100, Speed Unit = 0 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Download Time
    Download Time = timeString.trim()
    6m 25s = 6m 25s
  3. Calculate Total Seconds
    Total Seconds
    385 = 385
  4. Calculate File Size
    File Size
    4.7 = 4.7
