This calculator estimates flight duration and related figures from three inputs: Distance (the great-circle distance to fly, in miles), Airspeed (the aircraft's typical cruising speed), and Headwind (+) / Tailwind (-) (wind speed working against or with the aircraft, entered as a positive number for headwind and negative for tailwind). The engine first computes Ground Speed as Airspeed minus Headwind, clamped to a minimum of 1 mph so flight time never divides by zero or turns negative -- a headwind slows the plane's progress over the ground, while a tailwind speeds it up. Estimated Flight Time is then Distance divided by Ground Speed, shown as hours and minutes. Fuel Estimate (a rough reference figure, not an aircraft-specific burn rate) scales directly with flight hours. At zero wind, Distance and Airspeed move Fuel Estimate by equal and opposite proportions -- a 10% longer trip raises it about as much as a 10% faster cruising speed lowers it, because both sit one level away from flight hours (one as a direct multiplier on the numerator, the other reshaping the denominator). Once wind is entered, that balance tips in opposite directions depending on which way it blows: a genuine headwind pulls Ground Speed below Airspeed, so Airspeed's effect on Fuel Estimate grows larger than Distance's, while a tailwind instead pushes Ground Speed above Airspeed, diluting Airspeed's leverage so its effect on Fuel Estimate stays smaller than Distance's. Wind Impact translates the wind's effect into a plain-language minutes-lost-or-gained note. This is a simplified planning estimate -- it ignores climb/descent phases, air traffic routing, layovers, and real aircraft-specific fuel burn curves, all of which change actual flight time and consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Distance and Airspeed affect Fuel Estimate equally?

It depends on the wind. Fuel Estimate is flight hours times a flat reference rate, and flight hours are Distance divided by Ground Speed. With no headwind or tailwind entered, Distance and Airspeed move Fuel Estimate by the same proportion in opposite directions -- a genuine tie, since Ground Speed equals Airspeed at zero wind. Enter a genuine headwind and the tie breaks in Airspeed's favor: Ground Speed drops below Airspeed, so Airspeed's effect on Fuel Estimate becomes the larger of the two. Enter a tailwind instead and the tie breaks the other way: Ground Speed rises above Airspeed, diluting Airspeed's leverage so Distance stays the larger influence.

How does a headwind change the Ground Speed?

Ground Speed is calculated as Airspeed minus Headwind, with a floor of 1 mph so the result never reaches zero or goes negative. Entering a positive headwind value directly subtracts from Airspeed, slowing the aircraft's progress over the ground; entering a negative value (a tailwind) adds to Airspeed instead, speeding up the trip.

Does a faster Airspeed always shorten Estimated Flight Time?

Yes -- Estimated Flight Time is Distance divided by Ground Speed, and Ground Speed rises directly with Airspeed when wind is held fixed, so a higher Airspeed always produces a shorter flight time and, in turn, a lower Fuel Estimate, for any fixed Distance and wind condition.

Is the Fuel Estimate accurate for a specific aircraft?

No -- Fuel Estimate is a flat reference figure (flight hours times 5), not tied to any particular aircraft's real burn rate, payload, altitude, or engine type. Use it only as a rough planning reference, not as an operational fuel calculation for an actual flight.
