What a Board Foot Actually Is

A board foot is a unit of lumber volume, not length or area. One board foot equals a piece of wood 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long — 144 cubic inches of wood. That's it. It doesn't matter whether your actual board is thin and wide or thick and narrow; if it contains 144 cubic inches, it's one board foot.

This is different from a "linear foot," which only measures length regardless of thickness or width, and different from a board count, which tells you nothing about how much material you're actually getting. A 1×12 and a 2×6 can both be cut from roughly the same board foot count of lumber even though they look nothing alike on the rack.

The Board Foot Formula

The standard formula, using thickness and width in inches and length in feet, is:

Board Feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) / 12

The division by 12 is what converts the raw thickness × width × length product — which is in inch-inch-feet, an awkward mixed unit — into a true count of 144-cubic-inch units. It's a small detail, but it's the exact step that trips people up when they build their own spreadsheet: skip it, or apply it at the wrong point in the math, and every board foot figure downstream is wrong. Nominal vs. Actual Dimensions

If you calculate board feet using nominal dimensions when you're actually holding surfaced lumber, you'll overstate the material by a meaningful margin. Rough-sawn hardwood, by contrast, is often sold closer to its true nominal thickness (a rough "4/4" board is close to 1" thick before milling).   4. Total cubic feet: since 1 board foot is exactly 1/12 of a cubic foot (144 cubic inches out of 1,728 cubic inches per cubic foot), 32 board feet converts to 32 / 12 ≈ 2.67 cubic feet of wood — a figure worth knowing if you're estimating weight from a species' density, or checking whether a finish or stabilizing treatment is priced by volume.

Change any one dimension and the whole calculation moves proportionally: double the width to 12 inches and you double the board feet per piece to 8, with everything else held constant. That proportionality is exactly why the formula is a straight multiplication rather than something more complicated — board feet is a volume measurement, and volume scales directly with each of its three dimensions.

Why This Trips People Up

Almost every board foot mistake traces back to one of two things: mixing units (using inches for length instead of feet, or vice versa) or using the wrong dimensions for the lumber in hand (nominal when you should use actual, or actual when the yard is quoting nominal). Neither mistake is obvious from the result — a board foot number that's off by a factor of twelve, or off by the nominal-to-actual gap, still looks like a plausible number if you don't have a second way to check it.
