How to Use Our Grade Calculator

Not sure where you stand in a class? Our Grade Calculator computes your current grade based on your assignments and their weights.

Setting Up Your Grades

For each graded item, enter:

• Assignment Name (optional) -- For your reference.
• Your Score -- The points or percentage you earned.
• Maximum Score -- The total possible points.
• Weight (if applicable) -- How much this category counts toward your final grade. For example, homework might be 20%, midterm 30%, and final exam 50%.

How Weighting Works

In a weighted grading system, different categories count differently. If your weights are:

• Homework (20%): 95%
• Midterm (30%): 82%
• Final (50%): 88%

Your weighted grade = (0.95 x 0.20) + (0.82 x 0.30) + (0.88 x 0.50) = 0.19 + 0.246 + 0.44 = 87.6%

Without weighting, a simple average of 95, 82, and 88 gives 88.3% -- close but not identical.

Planning Your Final Grade

Use the calculator before finals to figure out what grade you need on the final exam to achieve your target course grade. If you need an A (90%) and the final is worth 40% of your grade, you can calculate the minimum final exam score required.
