How to Use Our Area Calculator
From flooring projects to garden beds, knowing the area of a space is a fundamental calculation. Our Area Calculator handles all common shapes.
Supported Shapes
Rectangle
Enter length and width. Area = length x width.
Circle
Enter the radius (half the diameter). Area = pi x radius squared. A circle with a 5-foot radius has an area of about 78.5 square feet.
Triangle
Enter the base and height. Area = (base x height) / 2. The height must be perpendicular to the base.
Trapezoid
Enter both parallel sides (top and bottom) and the height. Area = (top + bottom) / 2 x height.
Practical Applications
- Flooring and carpet: Calculate the area of each room to order the right amount of material (add 10% for waste).
- Landscaping: Determine how much sod, mulch, or gravel to order.
- Painting: Calculate wall areas to buy the right amount of paint.
- Garden planning: Size garden beds and estimate soil needs.
Working with Irregular Shapes
Break complex shapes into simpler ones. An L-shaped room is two rectangles. A room with a bay window is a rectangle plus a triangle or trapezoid. Calculate each part and add them together.
