Seed Rate Calculator

Calculate pounds of seed per acre based on crop type, row spacing, target plant population, and germination rate.

About this calculator

Crop Type reshapes Seed Rate more than any single numeric adjustment could, because seeds-per-pound varies enormously across species — roughly 1,450 seeds/lb for corn, 2,500 for soybean, and 12,000 for wheat in this calculator's reference figures. Switching crops changes the pounds-per-acre answer dramatically, since the same target plant population takes vastly different amounts of seed by weight depending on how large or small the individual seeds are. Germination Rate and Target Population both move Seed Rate by comparable proportional amounts, in opposite directions: lower germination means more seed must be planted to reach the same target stand, so Seed Rate rises as Germination Rate falls (dropping from a healthy 95% down to a marginal 55% raises the seed rate roughly 1.7x at default settings), while a higher Target Population directly and proportionally increases Seed Rate for the same germination assumption.

Row Spacing and Field Size, by contrast, have zero effect on the Seed Rate (lbs/acre) figure itself: Row Spacing only determines how that same per-acre rate translates into seeds dropped per foot of row, and Field Size only scales the per-acre rate up into a total-field seed order. Neither changes the underlying rate.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select the crop type (corn, soybean, or wheat) and enter your target plant population per acre.
  2. Enter the row spacing in inches and the germination rate from the seed tag.
  3. Enter the field size in acres to get total seed needed for the whole field.
  4. Review the seed rate in pounds per acre, along with total pounds needed and 50-lb bags needed.
  5. Check the seeds-per-foot-of-row and adjusted seeds-per-acre figures to fine-tune planter settings.

What each input means

Crop Type
Select your crop. Seeds-per-pound varies enormously by crop, so this is the single biggest driver of seeding rate.
Row Spacing
Distance between rows in inches. Corn/soybean: 30 in typical; wheat: 7.5 in typical.
Target Population
Desired plant population in thousands per acre. Corn: 32-36K; soybean: 120-140K; wheat: 1,200-1,600K.
Germination Rate
Seed germination percentage from the seed tag. Typically 90-98%.
Field Size
Total field area in acres to calculate total seed needed.

How this is calculated

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    5 parameters
    Crop Type = 1, Row Spacing = 30, Target Population = 34, Germination Rate = 95, Field Size = 160 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Seed Rate
    24.68 = 24.68
  3. Calculate Total Seed Needed
    Total Seed Needed
    3949.18 = 3949.18
  4. Calculate 50-lb Bags Needed
    50-lb Bags Needed
    79 = 79

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does switching Crop Type change Seed Rate so dramatically?

Different crops have very different seeds-per-pound counts — this calculator uses roughly 1,450 seeds/lb for corn, 2,500 for soybean, and 12,000 for wheat. Since Seed Rate is pounds needed to reach a target seed count, a crop with far more, far smaller seeds per pound (like wheat) needs a very different weight of seed than one with fewer, larger seeds (like corn), even at similar target populations.

Why does lowering Germination Rate increase how much seed I need?

Germination Rate determines what fraction of planted seeds are expected to actually emerge, so the calculator inflates the seeding rate to compensate for the seeds that won't come up. At default settings, dropping Germination Rate from 95% to 55% raises the calculated Seed Rate by roughly 1.7x, since planting enough seed to still hit your target stand at a much lower success rate takes substantially more seed.

I'm buying seed for a 160-acre field and a 40-acre field with the same population target -- will the per-acre order differ?

No -- the per-acre Seed Rate is calculated before Field Size ever enters the math, so a 160-acre field and a 40-acre field with the same target population, germination rate, and crop type get the identical pounds-per-acre figure; only Total Seed Needed and 50-lb Bags Needed scale up with the larger field's acreage.

I'm switching from 30-inch to 15-inch corn rows -- do I need to change Target Population to keep the same seed rate?

No -- keep Target Population as-is if you just want the same per-acre seed rate; Row Spacing only feeds Seeds per Foot of Row, the planter metering figure, and doesn't touch pounds-per-acre Seed Rate at all. If narrower rows are part of a deliberate plan to raise plant population, change Target Population directly -- that's a separate agronomic decision from row width.
