Seed Starting Calculator
Find out when to start seeds indoors, when to transplant, and when to expect your harvest based on plant type and last frost date.
About this calculator
This calculator works backward and forward from your local last frost date to build a full planting timeline for eight common garden plants. Plant Type is the single input that determines Days to Germinate and Days to Harvest -- both are fixed values looked up from typical seed-starting data for each plant (tomatoes take about 7 days to germinate and roughly 70 days from transplant to harvest, while lettuce germinates faster at about 5 days and matures sooner at about 45 days) -- so switching Plant Type is what actually reshapes your whole schedule, not Last Frost Date or Weeks to Start Indoors. Last Frost Date shifts every date in the output (start, transplant, harvest) by the same amount without changing how many days apart they are, since it's simply the anchor point the whole timeline is built around.
Weeks to Start Indoors only affects your Start Seeds Indoors date and Total Growing Days -- pushing it later moves your indoor start date closer to your last frost date and shortens the total time from seed to harvest, but it does not change your Transplant Outdoors or Expected Harvest dates, since those are set by the last frost date and the plant's own transplant offset, not by how long you grew seedlings indoors. Transplant timing itself varies by plant: cold-hardy plants like lettuce and broccoli are transplanted before the last frost (a negative offset), while tender plants like tomatoes, peppers, and melons wait until after it. These timings are general guidelines -- always check your specific USDA hardiness zone and local extension office recommendations, since microclimates and unusual weather years can shift them.

How to Use This Calculator
- Select your plant type (tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, squash, herbs, melons, broccoli, or annual flowers).
- Enter your last spring frost date as a day of the year — for example, April 30 = day 120, May 15 = day 135.
- Enter the number of weeks you plan to grow seedlings indoors before transplanting (typically 6-8 weeks for tomatoes).
- Review the Start Seeds Indoors date to know exactly when to sow your seeds.
- Note the Transplant Outdoors date and Expected Harvest date to plan your entire season.
- Use the Ideal Soil Temperature and Days to Germinate to optimize your germination setup.
What each input means
- Plant Type
- Select the type of plant to determine transplant timing and harvest estimates.
- Last Frost Date (Day of Year)
- Day of the year for your average last spring frost. Apr 30 = 120, May 15 = 135. Check your USDA zone.
- Weeks to Start Indoors
- Number of weeks to grow seedlings indoors before transplanting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does changing Plant Type reshape my whole schedule but Last Frost Date doesn't?
Days to Germinate and Days to Harvest are fixed values this calculator looks up for each Plant Type from typical seed-starting data, so switching plants changes how long each stage takes. Last Frost Date, by contrast, only shifts where that fixed-length schedule sits on the calendar -- it doesn't change how many days apart your start, transplant, and harvest dates are from each other.
Why do some plants transplant before the last frost date and others after?
Cold-hardy plants like lettuce and broccoli can tolerate light frost and are typically transplanted a couple of weeks before your last frost date to take advantage of cool spring weather, while tender, frost-sensitive plants like tomatoes, peppers, and melons must wait until after the last frost to avoid being killed by a late cold snap. This calculator encodes that difference as a per-plant offset applied to your Last Frost Date.
Does increasing Weeks to Start Indoors delay my harvest?
No -- Weeks to Start Indoors only moves your Start Seeds Indoors date earlier (further back from your last frost date) and shortens Total Growing Days; it doesn't change your Transplant Outdoors or Expected Harvest dates, since those are fixed relative to your last frost date and plant type, not to when you started seeds indoors.
How accurate is my Last Frost Date input?
The default day-of-year values (like day 120 for April 30) are just examples -- your actual average last frost date depends on your specific location and USDA hardiness zone, and it can vary meaningfully year to year. Check your local extension office or a USDA hardiness zone map for your area's typical last frost date before relying on this schedule.
What doesn't this calculator account for?
It uses fixed, typical timings by plant type and doesn't account for your specific variety within that plant type, indoor growing conditions like light and temperature, soil quality, or unusual weather in a given year -- all of which can shift germination, transplant readiness, and harvest timing earlier or later than these general estimates.
