IFTA Fuel Tax Calculator

Calculate fuel tax apportionment across jurisdictions for IFTA reporting.

About this calculator

This calculator applies the standard IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) apportionment method one jurisdiction at a time: Taxable Gallons is your fleet's overall fuel efficiency (Total Gallons Purchased divided across Total Miles) applied to however many miles you drove in this specific jurisdiction, on the theory that a truck burns fuel roughly proportionally to distance regardless of exactly where it stopped to refuel. Net Taxable Gallons subtracts Credit Gallons (fuel you actually purchased and paid tax on within that same jurisdiction) from Taxable Gallons -- if you bought more fuel there than the apportionment says you owe tax on, Net Taxable Gallons goes negative and Tax Owed becomes a credit instead of a liability. The default 36.1 cents/gallon Tax Rate is an illustrative example only, not a current published rate: IFTA member jurisdictions set and publish their own per-gallon rates every quarter, ranging from roughly $0.18/gal to over $1.00/gal depending on jurisdiction and fuel type, and Kentucky and Virginia add a separate diesel surcharge this calculator does not model.

Always pull the actual current-quarter rate from the official IFTA tax rate matrix before filing. Est. Total Liability multiplies Tax Owed by Number of Jurisdictions as a rough same-rate-everywhere estimate -- it does not actually compute each jurisdiction's real rate and mileage share, since this calculator only has inputs for one jurisdiction at a time.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Total Miles driven across all IFTA jurisdictions for the quarter.
  2. Input Total Gallons Purchased fleet-wide during the quarter.
  3. Set Jurisdiction Miles for the specific state/province being calculated.
  4. Enter the Jurisdiction Tax Rate (¢/gal) and Gallons Purchased in that jurisdiction.
  5. Review Tax Owed (or Credit), Fleet MPG, Taxable Gallons, and Net Taxable Gallons for the filing.

How the result changes with Total Miles (All Jurisdictions)

Total Miles (All Jurisdictions)Tax Owed (or Credit)
25,000$844.74
37,500$382.66
75,000-$79.42
125,000-$264.25

What each input means

Total Miles (All Jurisdictions)
Total miles driven in the reporting quarter across all jurisdictions.
Total Gallons Purchased
Total fuel gallons purchased in the quarter.
Jurisdiction Miles
Miles driven in the specific jurisdiction being calculated.
Tax Rate
Fuel tax rate in cents per gallon for this jurisdiction.
Gallons Purchased Here
Fuel gallons purchased within this jurisdiction (tax credit).
Number of Jurisdictions
Total number of IFTA jurisdictions you operate in.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    6 parameters
    Total Miles (All Jurisdictions) = 50000, Total Gallons Purchased = 8000, Jurisdiction Miles = 12000, Tax Rate = 36.1, Gallons Purchased Here = 1500, Number of Jurisdictions = 5 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Tax Owed
    Tax Owed
    151.62 = $151.62
  3. Calculate Fleet MPG
    Fleet MPG
    6.25 = 6.25
  4. Calculate Taxable Gallons
    Taxable Gallons
    1920 = 1920

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 36.1¢/gal default Tax Rate a real, current jurisdiction's rate?

No -- treat it strictly as an illustrative example, not a published rate for any specific state or province. IFTA member jurisdictions set their own fuel tax rates and publish an updated matrix every quarter, with real rates in recent history ranging from roughly $0.18/gal to over $1.00/gal depending on jurisdiction and fuel type. Always look up the actual current-quarter rate from the official IFTA tax rate matrix before using this calculator for a real filing.

Why would Tax Owed show a negative number (a credit)?

Tax Owed goes negative whenever Gallons Purchased Here (Credit Gallons) exceeds Taxable Gallons -- meaning you bought and already paid tax on more fuel in that jurisdiction than your mileage-based apportionment says you actually owe tax on there. IFTA is designed so jurisdictions where you over-bought fuel relative to miles driven generate a credit that offsets what you owe in jurisdictions where you under-bought relative to miles driven. Note that Tax Rate's effect on Tax Owed flips sign once you're in this credit position: with a normal (positive) Net Taxable Gallons, a higher Tax Rate increases the amount owed, but with a negative Net Taxable Gallons, a higher Tax Rate instead increases the size of the credit -- Tax Owed becomes more negative, not less.

Does Number of Jurisdictions change the Tax Owed figure for this one jurisdiction?

No -- Tax Owed is calculated purely from this jurisdiction's own Net Taxable Gallons and Tax Rate; Number of Jurisdictions only multiplies that single-jurisdiction figure to produce Est. Total Liability, a rough same-rate-everywhere estimate across your whole operation. A real IFTA return calculates each jurisdiction separately with its own actual tax rate and mileage share, which this rough multiplier does not replicate.

Can I enter Jurisdiction Miles that are larger than Total Miles?

This calculator's input ranges allow it, but the result won't make physical sense -- Jurisdiction Miles is supposed to be a subset of Total Miles (All Jurisdictions), so entering more miles for one jurisdiction than you drove in total will push Taxable Gallons above what your fleet actually purchased. Double-check that Jurisdiction Miles never exceeds Total Miles before relying on the result.

How is Fleet MPG used elsewhere in this calculation?

Fleet MPG itself (Total Miles divided by Total Gallons) is shown for reference, but Taxable Gallons is computed directly from the ratio of Jurisdiction Miles to Total Miles applied to Total Gallons Purchased, which amounts to the same fuel-efficiency assumption without a separate MPG step. A lower Fleet MPG (more fuel burned per mile) means more gallons apportioned to every jurisdiction you drove through, this one included.
