Tattoo Healing Timeline Calculator
Estimate tattoo healing milestones and aftercare timeline based on placement, size, and individual factors.
About this calculator
Every milestone this calculator reports is a fixed fraction of one number, Surface Healing days -- none of the other six outputs are calculated independently. Surface Healing itself starts from a base figure keyed to Tattoo Placement (9 body areas, ranging 14 to 28 days, lines 8-12), then multiplies that base by four separate factors for Tattoo Size, Color Work, Age, and Skin Tone (lines 15-26). From there, every other milestone is just Surface Healing times a fixed constant: Peeling Begins is 20% of it, Itching Peak 35%, Peeling Ends 50%, Safe to Swim 150%, and Full Deep Healing (plus Safe Sun Exposure, which reports the identical number) is a flat 3x (lines 27-34) -- so all seven outputs always move in exact lockstep with each other and can never diverge.
Age is applied through four brackets, not a smooth curve: under 25 gets a 0.9x speed bonus, 25 to 39 is the 1.0x baseline, 40 to 54 adds 1.15x, and 55 or older adds 1.3x -- and that 1.3x multiplier is the ceiling, so a 55-year-old and an 80-year-old receive the exact same healing estimate; Age stops changing anything past that point (line 21). Skin Tone has the smallest effect of any input: only Dark applies a multiplier at all, a 5% increase, while Fair and Medium are treated identically at 1.0x (line 24).

How to Use This Calculator
- Select the tattoo placement from the dropdown (forearm, upper arm, chest, back, ribs, hand/finger, foot/ankle, thigh, or calf).
- Choose the tattoo size category and the amount of color work (black & gray, some color, or full color).
- Enter your age and skin tone, since both affect healing speed.
- Review the Surface Healing and Full Deep Healing outputs, given in days.
- Use the Peeling Begins, Peeling Ends, Itching Peak, Safe to Swim, and Safe Sun Exposure outputs to plan your aftercare timeline.
What each input means

- Where the tattoo is located on the body
- Tattoo Size Category
- Approximate size of the tattoo
- Color Work
- Amount of color ink used
- Your Age
- Age affects healing speed
- Skin Tone
- Your skin tone

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Peeling Begins, Itching Peak, and the other milestones ever move independently of Surface Healing?
No. Every milestone besides Surface Healing itself is calculated as a fixed percentage of it: Peeling Begins is 20%, Itching Peak 35%, Peeling Ends 50%, Safe to Swim 150%, and Full Deep Healing (and Safe Sun Exposure, which is the same figure) is 300% (lines 27-34). Whatever changes Surface Healing changes every other milestone by the exact same proportion, in lockstep.
Does healing get slower and slower the older you are, without limit?
No -- Age is applied through four fixed brackets rather than a continuous curve, and the multiplier stops increasing at 1.3x once you reach 55 (line 21). A 55-year-old and an 80-year-old are given the identical healing estimate, since Age has no further effect once you're in that top bracket.
How much does Skin Tone actually affect the healing estimate?
Very little, and only in one direction. Fair and Medium skin tones are treated exactly the same, with no adjustment at all -- a 1.0x multiplier; only Dark applies any change, a 5% increase to the healing estimate (line 24). Of the four factors that adjust Surface Healing, Skin Tone has by far the smallest possible impact.
Is Full Deep Healing calculated separately from Surface Healing, using its own inputs?
No -- it's simply Surface Healing multiplied by a flat 3, on the assumption that deeper skin layers take about three times longer to finish healing than the visible surface (line 27). It reads no inputs of its own; anything that changes Surface Healing changes Full Deep Healing by exactly the same multiple.
