Tattoo Session Planner

Plan how many tattoo sessions you need based on design size, complexity, and session length.

About this calculator

Total Hours is built from two multiplications, not one: Total Design Area is multiplied by a rate keyed to Design Complexity (0.1 hours per square inch for simple linework up to 0.4 for photorealistic, lines 14-18), and that result is multiplied again by a Color Work factor (1.0x black & gray, 1.2x some color, 1.4x full color, line 19). Pain Tolerance sets a hard ceiling on how long any single session can run, and that ceiling can override Max Session Length entirely: Low caps every session at 3 hours and Average caps at 5 hours regardless of what you typed for Max Session Length, while only High lets your own Max Session Length figure through unmodified (lines 23-24) -- so raising Max Session Length above 3 or 5 hours does nothing unless Pain Tolerance is set to High. Sessions Needed is a ceiling-rounded division of Total Hours by that effective session length (line 26), which makes it a step function: a small increase in Total Design Area near a whole multiple of your effective session length can add an entire extra session, not a fractional one.

Outline Time is capped at 30% of Total Hours or your effective session length, whichever is smaller (line 33), and Shading/Color Time is simply whatever's left over (line 34). Hours per Session is Total Hours divided by Sessions Needed -- an average across the whole plan, not the length of any specific session -- and because Sessions Needed jumps in whole steps, Hours per Session can actually go down right at the point where Total Design Area pushes Sessions Needed up by one, since the same (or slightly more) total time is now spread across an extra session.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the estimated total hours required to complete the tattoo.
  2. Set the maximum session length your client can comfortably tolerate.
  3. Input the recommended healing time between sessions in weeks.
  4. Review the Number of Sessions required and the Total Calendar Time to completion.
  5. Use the Session Breakdown to outline a realistic multi-session plan for the client.

What each input means

Maximum hours you want per session
Pain Tolerance
Your pain tolerance level

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Total Design Area = 40, Design Complexity = 2, Color Work = 0, Max Session Length = 5 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Sessions Needed
    Sessions Needed
    2 = 2
  3. Calculate Total Hours
    Total Hours
    6 = 6
  4. Calculate Hours per Session

Frequently Asked Questions

Does raising Max Session Length always increase how long each session can be?

Only if Pain Tolerance is set to High. For Low Pain Tolerance, every session is capped at 3 hours no matter what Max Session Length says, and for Average it's capped at 5 hours (lines 23-24). Max Session Length only takes full effect once Pain Tolerance is High, or when your own entered value is already below whichever cap applies.

Why did adding a tiny bit more design area suddenly add a whole extra session?

Sessions Needed is calculated by rounding Total Hours divided by your effective session length up to the next whole number (line 26), so it's a step function rather than a smooth scale. Once Total Hours crosses a whole multiple of that session length, Sessions Needed jumps by exactly one session, even if the design area increase that caused it was small.

Can Hours per Session ever go down when I increase Total Design Area?

Yes, right at the moment Total Design Area pushes Sessions Needed up by one. Hours per Session is Total Hours divided by Sessions Needed -- an average, not any single session's real length -- so when the same or slightly higher Total Hours suddenly gets divided across one more session, the average per session can drop even though the overall project got bigger.

Is Total Timeline (in weeks) based on healing time, or something else?

It's a fixed assumption, not a healing-time calculation: 3 weeks between each session, multiplied by however many sessions beyond the first one you need (lines 29-30). It doesn't read Pain Tolerance, Design Complexity, or any healing-related input -- it only depends on Sessions Needed.
