Budget Gamification Score Calculator
Points and streaks from adherence.
About this calculator
This calculator turns budget discipline into a point-scoring game across four weighted components that sum to a 0–100 total. Adherence points (up to 40) scale with the fraction of your budget categories that stayed on or under budget this month. Streak points (up to 20) award 2 points per consecutive on-budget month, capped at 10 months, and separately assign a streak level from Beginner (0 months) up through Legend (12+ months) so momentum is tracked even after the point cap is hit. Savings points (up to 25) scale with the percentage of your savings goal you actually hit, capped at 100% of the goal.
Discretionary points (up to 15) reward cutting discretionary spending, but note the scaling: it reaches full credit at just a 20% reduction (the code divides your reduction percentage by 20, not 100), so even a modest cutback earns close to the maximum here. The combined score maps to a badge tier from none up through Diamond at 90+, and the calculator also reports how many points stand between you and the next badge. Because every input is self-reported — you're the one declaring how many categories were "on budget" or what your savings goal was — the score only reflects the honesty and consistency of what you enter; it can't verify against actual transaction data. Treat it as a motivational nudge to reinforce good habits, not an audited measure of financial health.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does hitting just a 20% discretionary spending reduction max out the discretionary points?
The formula divides your reduction percentage by 20 (not 100) before capping at 1, so a 20% cut earns the full 15 points and anything higher still earns the same 15 — it never keeps scaling toward a 100% reduction. It's a deliberate choice to make the discretionary bonus achievable without demanding an extreme cutback.
What's the difference between streak points and streak level?
Streak points are a capped numeric score — 2 points per consecutive on-budget month, maxing out at 20 points after 10 months. Streak level is a separate 0-5 tier from Beginner through Legend that keeps climbing past that point cap, reaching Legend at 12+ months, so momentum is still recognized once the points portion has topped out.
How many points come from each component, and which matters most?
Adherence — the fraction of categories on or under budget — contributes up to 40 points, the largest single share. Savings-goal achievement contributes up to 25, the on-budget streak up to 20, and discretionary spending reduction up to 15. Staying within your category budgets each month carries the most weight in the total score.
Can this score be gamed by entering optimistic numbers?
Yes — every input, including how many categories were "on budget" and what percentage of your savings goal you hit, is self-reported with no connection to actual transaction data. The calculator is explicitly built as a motivational tool to reinforce good habits, not an audited assessment, so its accuracy depends entirely on the honesty of what you enter.
