Gig Economy Earnings Calculator

Calculate your true net earnings from gig work like rideshare or delivery. Factor in platform fees, vehicle costs, gas, and self-employment taxes to see your real hourly rate.

About this calculator

Gig income looks bigger on the app's dashboard than it is in your pocket, and this calculator walks through why. It starts from your gross monthly earnings, subtracts the platform's cut (the percentage Uber, DoorDash, or similar take before you ever see the money), then subtracts vehicle costs split into two pieces: fuel, estimated by dividing your monthly miles by an assumed 25 miles per gallon and multiplying by the gas price you enter, and a separate per-mile maintenance/depreciation cost you supply directly to cover wear, tires, and the vehicle's declining resale value. What's left is taxable income, against which a self-employment tax rate is applied (floored at zero so a loss month doesn't produce a negative tax) to arrive at net earnings.

Dividing net earnings by your monthly hours — hours per week times 4.33 weeks — gives the Effective Hourly Rate, which is usually the number that matters most for deciding whether gig work beats an alternative job. The biggest source of error is the vehicle cost inputs: the 25-mpg fuel assumption won't match every vehicle, and the per-mile maintenance figure is only as accurate as what you enter, so pulling from IRS standard mileage guidance or your own repair history will give a more honest picture than guessing. The self-employment tax rate defaults to the combined Social Security and Medicare rate but doesn't account for the deduction gig workers can typically take for half of that tax when filing.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your gross monthly gig earnings before platform fees or expenses.
  2. Set the platform fee percentage charged by your gig app (typically 15–30%).
  3. Input vehicle costs per mile and monthly miles driven, plus current gas price for accurate deduction.
  4. Add your self-employment tax rate and hours worked per week to compute the effective hourly rate.
  5. Review Net Earnings and Effective Hourly Rate to understand your true take-home pay versus time invested.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fuel cost estimated, and does it match my actual vehicle?

Fuel cost is your monthly miles divided by a fixed assumption of 25 miles per gallon, multiplied by the gas price you enter. That mpg figure is a constant in the calculation, not something you can change here, so a smaller or larger vehicle than a typical sedan will see its real fuel cost diverge from this estimate.

Why is Taxes Due never negative even in a low-earning month?

The calculator floors taxable income's tax at zero (Math.max(0, taxableIncome × rate)), so a month where fees and vehicle costs exceed your gross earnings shows $0 in taxes rather than a negative figure that would imply a refund. It simply doesn't model losses carrying forward or offsetting other income.

Does the self-employment tax rate account for the deduction gig workers can take on it?

No — the rate you enter (defaulting to the combined 15.3% Social Security and Medicare rate) is applied directly to taxable income with no adjustment. In practice, self-employed filers can typically deduct half of self-employment tax when computing income tax, so your actual net tax burden may be somewhat lower than this calculator shows.

What should I enter for Hours Per Week to get an accurate Effective Hourly Rate?

Effective Hourly Rate divides net monthly earnings by your hours per week times 4.33 (average weeks per month), so the figure only reflects your real per-hour return if you count all the time gig work actually takes — including waiting for rides or orders, not just time spent actively driving or delivering.
