Minimum Viable Budget Calculator

Calculate your bare-minimum survival budget — the absolute floor of what you need to cover essentials each month.

About this calculator

A minimum viable budget strips spending down to what is truly non-negotiable -- the floor you would need even in a worst-case scenario, not the budget you would ideally like to have. Total Minimum Budget sums Rent / Housing, Minimum Utilities, Minimum Food, Minimum Transport, Minimum Insurance, Minimum Debt Payments, and Minimum Healthcare -- seven essential categories, each meant to be entered at its bare-minimum viable level rather than your normal spending. Required Annual Income multiplies that monthly floor by 12, and Required Hourly Wage divides the annual figure by a standard 2,080-hour work year (40 hours a week for 52 weeks), showing the wage a full-time worker would need just to cover essentials with nothing left over.

Survival Runway answers a different question -- given Current Savings and zero income, how many months could you cover this minimum budget before running out of cash -- while Monthly Deficit (no income) shows the fixed monthly shortfall you would face with no income at all: it always equals the full Total Minimum Budget, since having savings in the bank extends how long you can cover that gap but does not shrink the size of the gap itself. Rent / Housing is often one of the largest single line items in a real minimum budget, but exactly how much it contributes depends entirely on local housing costs and the values you enter for the other six categories -- no single category is guaranteed to dominate the total. Use this calculator to stress-test your finances before a career change, to size an emergency fund against real minimum expenses, or to see the true floor wage you would need to become financially self-sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Current Savings change the Total Minimum Budget?

No -- Total Minimum Budget is purely the sum of the seven essential expense categories (Rent / Housing, Minimum Utilities, Minimum Food, Minimum Transport, Minimum Insurance, Minimum Debt Payments, and Minimum Healthcare) and does not depend on Current Savings at all. Current Savings only affects Survival Runway, which measures how many months that savings balance could cover the fixed minimum budget.

Why doesn't Monthly Deficit (no income) change when I add more savings?

Monthly Deficit (no income) represents the size of the monthly shortfall you'd face with zero income -- it always equals the full Total Minimum Budget, since the deficit is a rate (dollars short per month), not a balance. Current Savings changes how many months you could sustain that deficit before running out (see Survival Runway), but it doesn't shrink the size of the monthly gap itself.

How much does Rent / Housing affect Total Minimum Budget?

Rent / Housing adds directly to Total Minimum Budget dollar for dollar, the same as every other category here -- there's no weighting or multiplier that makes it count more. In many real budgets housing is one of the largest line items, but that depends entirely on local market rates and what you enter for the other six categories, so it's worth double-checking your housing figure carefully rather than assuming it will always dominate the total.

How is Required Hourly Wage calculated from the minimum budget?

Required Hourly Wage takes Required Annual Income (Total Minimum Budget multiplied by 12 months) and divides it by 2,080 -- the standard full-time work year of 40 hours per week across 52 weeks. This gives the pre-tax hourly wage a full-time worker would need to earn just to cover bare-minimum essentials, with nothing left over for taxes, savings, or discretionary spending.
