True Hourly Wage Calculator

Calculate your real hourly wage by dividing take-home pay by total work-related hours including commute, preparation, and expenses. See what you actually earn per hour.

About this calculator

This calculator strips away the illusion of a clean hourly number by dividing your net annual income — take-home pay after taxes, minus annualized work-related expenses like commuting costs, work clothes, or childcare — by the total hours your job actually consumes each year. That total counts your scheduled work hours plus your round-trip commute (doubling the one-way minutes you enter) plus daily prep and wind-down time, all multiplied out across your work days and a 50-week year that assumes two weeks of vacation. The gap between that True Hourly Rate and the Official Hourly Rate (take-home pay divided only by scheduled work hours) is reported as Hidden Cost Percentage, and it's often larger than people expect once a 45-minute commute and 30 minutes of getting-ready time are added on both ends of the day.

A common mixup is entering the commute as a round trip already — the calculator doubles whatever one-way figure you provide, so putting in your full daily commute time will overstate the effect. The 50-week assumption is also a fixed constant, not an input, so anyone with more or less vacation than two weeks will see a true rate that's slightly off in the corresponding direction. Use this to compare job offers with different commute distances or benefit structures rather than just their sticker salaries.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your annual salary and effective tax rate to get after-tax pay.
  2. Input your round-trip commute time in minutes and prep/wind-down time (getting ready, decompressing) per day.
  3. Add work-related monthly expenses such as commuting costs, work clothes, meals, and childcare.
  4. Review True Hourly Rate versus Official Hourly Rate to see the gap hidden by job-related time and costs.
  5. Use Annual Time Lost to assess how many hours per year your job actually consumes beyond contract hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

I entered my full round-trip commute time — why does the result look wrong?

The calculator always doubles whatever commute figure you enter, since it expects a one-way time and multiplies by two for the return trip. If you already entered your total round-trip minutes, the calculator effectively counts it twice, overstating your daily commute time and understating your True Hourly Rate — enter only the one-way minutes.

Where does the 50-week work year come from?

It's a fixed constant in the calculation (assuming two weeks of vacation), not one of the inputs you can adjust. If you take more or less than two weeks off per year, your actual annual hours will differ from what this calculator assumes, and your true hourly rate will shift slightly in the corresponding direction.

What exactly is included in Total Work Hours/Day?

It's your entered Work Hours Per Day plus your round-trip commute time (one-way minutes doubled, converted to hours) plus your daily prep/wind-down time. This is the denominator used to compute True Hourly Rate, so it captures time your job effectively consumes even though only the scheduled hours show up on a timesheet.

What does Hidden Cost Percentage actually measure?

It's the gap between your Official Hourly Rate (take-home pay divided only by scheduled work hours) and your True Hourly Rate (net income divided by all job-consumed hours), shown as a percentage of the official rate. It captures both the unpaid time — commute and prep — and the expense/tax drag on net income, all in one number.
