Sabbatical Savings Calculator

Plan financially for a career break. Calculate the total cost of a sabbatical including living expenses and health insurance, plus a recommended safety buffer.

About this calculator

A sabbatical is a planned career break, and this calculator prices one out the way you'd price any fixed-length trip: monthly living expenses plus monthly health insurance, multiplied by how many months the break will last. Health insurance gets its own line because it's the cost people most often forget once a paycheck and employer coverage both stop at the same time. On top of that base cost, the calculator adds a 10% buffer for the unplanned expenses every extended break tends to surface, from a car repair to a flight home for a family emergency, giving a total-with-buffer figure rather than a bare-bones one.

It then subtracts whatever you've already saved toward the sabbatical and divides what's left by the number of months you have until your planned start date, producing a monthly savings target. Every step here is straightforward addition, multiplication, and division with no investment growth assumed on your savings between now and the sabbatical — if you're parking the fund somewhere that earns interest, the actual monthly amount needed will be slightly lower than what's shown. The calculator also doesn't account for any income you might earn during the break itself, such as freelance work or a partner's salary, so if you expect partial income during your time off, treat the monthly target here as an upper bound.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is health insurance broken out as its own input instead of folded into monthly expenses?

Leaving full-time work usually means losing employer-subsidized coverage at the same time your paycheck stops, and COBRA or ACA marketplace premiums can run several hundred dollars a month higher than what you were paying before. Separating it keeps that jump visible instead of burying it inside a generic expenses number that might understate it.

What is the 10% buffer actually meant to cover?

It's a cushion for costs that don't show up in a routine monthly budget but reliably appear during an extended break — an unplanned repair, a medical copay, a flight for a family event, or simply underestimating a category like food or travel. It isn't tied to any specific expense; it's added on top of your full sabbatical cost as a flat safety margin.

Does the calculator assume my sabbatical savings will earn interest while I wait?

No — it treats your current savings and future contributions as a simple sum with no investment growth between now and your sabbatical start date. If you're keeping the fund in an interest-bearing account, your actual required monthly savings will end up a little lower than the figure this calculator shows.

How is the monthly savings needed figure calculated?

It takes the total sabbatical cost plus the 10% buffer, subtracts what you've already saved, and divides the remainder by the number of months you have left before the sabbatical starts. A longer runway to save spreads the same total across more months and lowers the monthly figure; a shorter one raises it.
