Vacation Savings Planner

Figure out exactly how much to save each month to fund your dream vacation. Accounts for interest earned on savings along the way.

About this calculator

This calculator solves for the fixed Monthly Savings Needed to close the gap between what you've already saved and your Total Trip Cost, by a set departure date, using the future-value-of-an-annuity formula banks use for regular deposits into an interest-bearing account. Remaining to Save is simply Total Trip Cost minus Currently Saved. If your Savings Account Rate is above 0%, both your existing balance and each future monthly deposit earn compound interest between now and your trip, so Interest Earned reduces how much you actually need to contribute out of pocket -- Total You Contribute plus Interest Earned should add up to Remaining to Save.

A higher trip cost or a lower current balance both raise Monthly Savings Needed, while more months until departure or a higher interest rate both lower it, since either gives your money more room to grow (or spreads the same goal over more deposits) before you need the full amount. If Savings Account Rate is left at 0%, the calculator falls back to simple division: Remaining to Save spread evenly across Months Until Trip, with no interest boost.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the total estimated trip cost including flights, hotel, food, and activities.
  2. Set the number of months until your departure date.

  5. Review the required monthly savings amount, remaining to save, and total interest earned while saving.

How the result changes with Total Trip Cost

Total Trip CostMonthly Savings Needed
$2,500.00$161.38
$3,750.00$263.42
$7,500.00$569.52
$12,500.00$977.67

What each input means

Total Trip Cost
Estimated total cost of the trip including flights, hotel, food, and activities.
Months Until Trip
How many months until your planned departure date.
Currently Saved
Amount you have already saved specifically for this trip.
Savings Account Rate
Annual interest rate on your savings account (e.g. high-yield savings).

What each result means

Interest Credited to Goal
The share of Total Trip Cost covered by interest rather than your own deposits. Once your existing balance alone can cover the trip, this stops at the remaining gap rather than reporting the full interest your account earns.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Total Trip Cost = 5000, Months Until Trip = 12, Currently Saved = 500, Savings Account Rate = 4.5 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Monthly Savings Needed
    Monthly Savings Needed
    365.45 = $365.45
  3. Calculate Remaining to Save
    Remaining to Save
    4500 = $4,500
  4. Calculate Interest Earned
    Interest Earned
    114.56 = $114.56

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does raising the interest rate lower my required monthly savings?

A higher Savings Account Rate means both your Currently Saved balance and each future monthly deposit earn more compound interest before your trip, so Interest Earned covers a larger share of your Total Trip Cost. That leaves a smaller remaining amount that has to come from Monthly Savings Needed, which is why increasing the rate (holding everything else fixed) lowers the required monthly contribution.

What happens if I set Months Until Trip very low, like 1 or 2?

Monthly Savings Needed rises sharply, since the same Remaining to Save amount has to be covered in far fewer deposits and there's very little time for Savings Account Rate to add meaningful interest. In the extreme, at 1 month out, Monthly Savings Needed is close to the full Remaining to Save amount in a single deposit.

Does Interest Earned assume I'm depositing at the start or end of each month?

The calculator's annuity formula effectively treats each Monthly Savings Needed deposit as landing at the end of its month (an "ordinary annuity"), which is the standard, slightly more conservative convention -- it earns interest for one fewer month than a deposit made at the start of the month would, so Interest Earned is a modest underestimate if you actually save earlier in each month.

Why is Total You Contribute different from Total Trip Cost?

Total Trip Cost is covered by three sources added together: what you've already saved (Currently Saved), what you'll actively contribute going forward (Total You Contribute), and Interest Credited to Goal -- the share of the cost your balance covers through growth rather than deposits. Those three always sum to Total Trip Cost. One scoping note: if Currently Saved compounds past Total Trip Cost on its own, Monthly Savings Needed and Total You Contribute both go to zero and Interest Credited to Goal stops at the remaining gap, which is less than the interest the account actually earns over that period.
