How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the length and width (depth) of each countertop piece in inches and set the thickness (standard is 1.5 in).
- Choose mix type: 1 for standard wet-cast (heavier, gravel + rebar) or 2 for GFRC (lighter glass-fiber-reinforced).
- Enter the number of pieces to cast — each section is calculated separately.
- Review Portland Cement (lbs), Sand (lbs), and Water (quarts) to batch your mix accurately.
- Note Weight per Piece (lbs) to plan safe lifting and verify cabinet load capacity.
- Use Total Material Cost and Cost per Sq Ft to compare DIY versus buying pre-cast countertops.
How the result changes with Length per piece (inches)
| Length per piece (inches) | Total material cost ($) |
|---|---|
| 25 | $36.33 |
| 58 | $73.91 |
| 98 | $119.46 |
| 131 | $157.04 |
What each input means
- Length per piece (inches)
- Length of each countertop piece in inches (max 12 ft for manageability).
- Width / depth (inches)
- Front-to-back depth. Standard kitchen countertops are 25-26 inches.
- Thickness (inches)
- Slab thickness. Standard: 1.5". GFRC can be thinner (0.75-1").
- Mix type (1-2)
- 1 = standard wet-cast (heavier, uses gravel + rebar). 2 = GFRC (lighter, uses glass fibers + polymer).
- Number of pieces
- Number of countertop sections to cast.
What each result means
- Total material cost ($)
- Estimated total cost for mix ingredients, reinforcement, mold, and sealer.
- Cost per sq ft ($)
- Material cost per square foot of countertop.
- Total area (sq ft)
- Combined surface area of all pieces.
- Portland cement (lbs)
- Type I/II portland cement needed.
- Sand (lbs)
- Fine silica sand or play sand.
- Pea gravel (lbs)
- 3/8" pea gravel (wet-cast only; GFRC uses 0).
- AR glass fiber (lbs)
- Alkali-resistant glass fibers (GFRC only).
- Water (quarts)
- Mixing water for the concrete.
- Rebar (linear ft)
- 3/8" rebar or pencil rod for wet-cast reinforcement.
- Food-safe sealer (quarts)
- Food-safe penetrating sealer, 2 coats both sides.
- Weight per piece (lbs)
- Approximate cured weight of each countertop section.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersLength per piece (inches) = 96, Width / depth (inches) = 26, Thickness (inches) = 1.5, Mix type (1-2) = 1 = 5 input(s) provided
- Calculate Total material costTotal material cost = cementLbs * cementCostPerLb +117.18 = $117.18
- Calculate Cost per sq ft6.76 = $6.76
- Calculate Total areaTotal area = areaSqFt * numPieces17.33 = 17.33
