Wall Area (net) is Wall Length times Wall Height times Number of Walls, minus a standard 21 sq ft for every door and 15 sq ft for every window — so Doors and Windows always subtract from the total rather than being a separate line item. Because door and window openings are usually a small fraction of total wall area, nudging Doors or Windows by one unit barely moves the net area or the sheet count in a small room, but the effect is real and adds up: swapping a 1-door, 2-window room for the same room with 0 doors and 0 windows recovers 51 sq ft, enough to change the sheet count outright in a tight layout. Sheets Needed adds a flat 10% waste factor on top of Net Area divided by Sheet Size and rounds up, since drywall doesn't come in fractional sheets. Wall Length, Wall Height, and Number of Walls all scale Sheets Needed the same way, since they're multiplied together with no other factor between them. Joint Tape Rolls, Joint Compound Buckets, and Screw Boxes are each independent coverage-rate divisions off Net Area — 375 sq ft per tape roll, 480 sq ft per compound bucket, and roughly 1.5 screws per sq ft at 200 screws per box — so all three track Net Area directly rather than Sheets Needed. This estimate assumes standard 1/2-inch drywall on a typical stud layout and does not account for ceiling area, corner bead, or cutouts for outlets and switches.

Why does adding one more door barely change my sheet count?
A standard door subtracts a fixed 21 sq ft from Wall Area (net), which is a small slice of most rooms' total wall area — so on a typical job, one extra door usually isn't enough to cross a sheet-count rounding boundary. The effect is real and consistent, it's just small relative to the room's overall square footage.
Do Joint Tape, Compound, and Screws scale with Sheets Needed or Wall Area?
They're each calculated directly from Wall Area (net) using their own coverage rate — 375 sq ft per tape roll, 480 sq ft per compound bucket, and about 1.5 screws per sq ft — rather than being derived from the sheet count. That keeps them accurate even though Sheets Needed includes a 10% waste buffer that the material-coverage numbers don't need.
Why is there a 10% waste factor built into Sheets Needed?
Drywall sheets have to be cut to fit around corners, openings, and odd wall lengths, and offcuts from one sheet often can't be reused elsewhere on the job. A flat 10% buffer on top of the exact coverage math accounts for that waste so you don't run short mid-job.
Does switching to a larger sheet size reduce material cost?
It reduces the sheet count and the number of seams to tape and mud, since each 4×10 or 4×12 sheet covers more area than a 4×8, but larger sheets also cost more per sheet and are heavier to hang, so the net cost difference depends on your supplier's pricing, not just the sheet count this calculator returns.
