Flooring Calculator
Calculate how much flooring you need for a room. Accounts for waste, calculates boxes needed, and estimates cost.
This calculator finds total flooring area from room dimensions, adds a waste percentage for cuts and offcuts, and converts the result into boxes and estimated cost. Room Length and Room Width move Total Sq Ft Needed by exactly the same proportion -- because room area is their direct product, raising either dimension by a given percentage raises the total material needed by that same percentage, with neither dimension outweighing the other. Cost per Sq Ft and Box Coverage, despite being flooring-specific inputs, have zero effect on Total Sq Ft Needed -- that figure is purely a function of room area and waste factor, while cost per square foot and box coverage only come into play afterward, when converting the required area into a dollar estimate and a box count. Waste Factor also raises Total Sq Ft Needed, but by a much smaller margin than either room dimension does at typical room sizes, since it's applied as a percentage addition on top of the base area rather than a multiplicative factor on the whole formula. This is a straightforward area-and-waste estimate -- it doesn't account for diagonal or herringbone installation patterns (which typically need a higher waste factor), room obstructions, or flooring sold only in fixed-length runs.

Total Sq Ft Needed
198 sq ft
≈ 5 king-size beds
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the room length and width in feet to calculate the floor area.
- Set the waste factor percentage — 10% is standard for most installations, more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
- Enter the cost per square foot from your flooring supplier.
- Set the box coverage in square feet (typically 20 sq ft per box for laminate or vinyl planks).
- Read the total sq ft to buy, boxes needed, and estimated material cost.
How the result changes with Room Length
| Room Length | Total Sq Ft Needed |
|---|---|
| 51 | 673.2 sq ft |
| 176 | 2,323.2 sq ft |
| 325 | 4,290 sq ft |
| 450 | 5,940 sq ft |
What each input means
- Room Length
- Length of the shape or side.
- Room Width
- Width of the shape or side.
- Waste Factor
- Extra material for cuts and waste. 10% is standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do room length and room width affect the material estimate equally?
Yes -- Total Sq Ft Needed is built from Room Area, which is Room Length multiplied by Room Width, so a given percentage increase in either dimension raises the total material needed by that same percentage. Neither dimension is weighted more heavily than the other.
Does the cost per square foot change how much flooring I need to buy?
No -- Cost per Sq Ft only affects the dollar estimate (Estimated Cost), not Total Sq Ft Needed. The area calculation is finished, including the waste allowance, before cost per square foot ever enters the formula, so changing the price has zero effect on how much material the calculator says you need.
Does box coverage size affect the total square footage I need?
No -- Box Coverage only determines how the already-calculated Total Sq Ft Needed gets divided into whole boxes for Boxes Needed. It has no effect on the underlying square footage figure itself, which depends only on room dimensions and waste factor.
How much does the waste factor typically add to the total?
Waste Factor adds its percentage directly on top of the base room area, and at the default 10% setting that's a much smaller increase to Total Sq Ft Needed than a similar percentage change in either room dimension would produce, since it only scales the waste allowance rather than the whole area calculation.
