Roof Coating Calculator

Calculate gallons of roof coating and primer needed based on roof area, coating type, and number of coats.

About this calculator

This calculator estimates how many gallons of roof coating and primer a project needs, plus total material cost, based on roof area, coating type, number of coats, and coverage rate. Coating Type has the largest effect on Total Cost -- Acrylic runs $30 per gallon, Silicone $55, and Polyurethane $65, so switching coating types on an identical roof can swing the total more than a realistic change in Coverage Rate or Number of Coats does -- but it has no effect at all on Coating Gallons or Primer Gallons, since both of those depend only on Coverage Rate, Number of Coats, and Roof Area, not on which product you've selected. That means the Coverage Rate field is what actually controls how much material the calculator thinks you need; if you switch from Acrylic to Silicone, which realistically covers less roof area per gallon, you'll need to update Coverage Rate yourself to see that reflected in Coating Gallons.

Number of Coats multiplies Coating Gallons directly, and a higher Coverage Rate (more square feet covered per gallon) reduces the number of gallons required. Primer is calculated separately at a 20% higher coverage rate than the coating itself, assuming a single primer coat.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select coating type (Acrylic, Silicone, or Polyurethane) -- price per gallon is set automatically by type.
  2. Enter roof area (sqft) and the number of coats planned.
  3. Set coverage rate (sqft/gallon) for your selected product.
  4. Review gallons of primer and coating needed, coating cost, and total material cost.
  5. Add labor (0.5-1.0 hour per square for spray application) to complete your estimate.

What each input means

Roof Area
Total roof surface area to coat
Coating Type
Type of roof coating to apply
Number of Coats
Number of coating layers (2 is standard)
Coverage Rate
Coverage rate per gallon (check product specs)

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Roof Area = 3000, Coating Type = 1, Number of Coats = 2, Coverage Rate = 75 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Coating Gallons
    Coating Gallons
    80 = 80
  3. Calculate Total Cost
    Total Cost
    3250 = $3,250
  4. Calculate Primer Gallons
    Primer Gallons
    34 = 34
  5. Calculate Coating Cost
    Coating Cost
    2400 = $2,400

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does switching coating type change my cost but not my gallons needed?

Coating Type sets the price per gallon -- $30 for Acrylic, $55 for Silicone, $65 for Polyurethane -- which drives Total Cost, but Coating Gallons and Primer Gallons are calculated purely from Coverage Rate, Number of Coats, and Roof Area, so the type you pick doesn't change how many gallons the calculator says you need.

If I switch to silicone, should I change the coverage rate?

Yes -- Silicone and Polyurethane realistically cover less roof area per gallon than Acrylic, but the calculator won't adjust that for you automatically; update Coverage Rate to match your chosen product's actual spec sheet so Coating Gallons reflects the real material usage for that coating.

How is Primer Gallons calculated differently from Coating Gallons?

Primer Gallons uses a coverage rate 20% higher than your entered Coverage Rate, reflecting that a thin primer coat typically spreads further per gallon than the thicker roof coating itself, and it assumes a single primer coat regardless of how many coating coats you specify.

Does adding a third coat increase my gallons needed proportionally?

Yes -- Number of Coats multiplies directly into Coating Gallons, so going from two coats to three increases the coating gallons required by roughly 50%, while Primer Gallons stays the same since primer is calculated as a single coat independent of Number of Coats.
