This calculator figures out how many wallpaper strips fit vertically in one roll, how many strips your wall needs horizontally, and then how many full rolls that requires. Strips Per Roll is simply Roll Length divided by Wall Height, so Wall Height and Roll Length are two symmetric levers pulling in opposite directions on that same ratio: at the default dimensions, a proportional increase in Wall Height and an equal proportional decrease in Roll Length shrink Strips Per Roll by the same amount, and either one on its own can knock the roll one full strip shorter, forcing an extra roll purchase -- a longer roll saves a roll purchase just as reliably as a shorter wall does. Pattern Repeat has a real effect too, since it shortens the usable roll length before strips are cut from it; raising it from 0 to 24 inches at the default dimensions is enough to push Rolls Needed up by one on its own. Wall Width and Roll Width also feed into how many strips the job needs, but at these particular dimensions both stay within the same "number of rolls" bracket across a normal range of adjustment, because rolls are only bought in whole numbers and the strip counts happen to round to the same roll total either way -- that can flip for a wider wall or a narrower roll, so don't assume either input is truly irrelevant. Wall Area, by contrast, scales cleanly and proportionally with both Wall Height and Wall Width, since it's simply their product. This estimate does not add extra material for cutting mistakes beyond the stated pattern repeat allowance, so buying one extra roll as a buffer is common practice, especially with a pattern repeat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does wall height change the number of rolls needed but wall width doesn't seem to?

Wall Height determines how many strips can be cut from one roll's length -- even a modest height increase can reduce that count by a whole strip, forcing an extra roll. Roll Length has the identical effect in the opposite direction: a modest decrease in Roll Length shrinks Strips Per Roll by the same amount a height increase does. Wall Width changes how many strips the wall needs, but at these default dimensions the strip count happens to round to the same roll total either way; a wider wall can still push the roll count up.

Does the roll width I select matter for how many rolls I need to buy?

It can, but at this calculator's default wall and roll dimensions, changing roll width within a normal range doesn't shift the final rolls-needed figure, since the strip counts it produces still round to the same roll total. A significantly different roll width can change the outcome, so it's worth re-checking with your actual product's roll width entered.

How does wall area scale with wall height and width?

Wall Area is simply Wall Height multiplied by Wall Width, so it scales proportionally and predictably with both -- a given percentage increase in either dimension raises the wall area by that same percentage, unlike Rolls Needed, which jumps in whole-roll steps as strip counts cross rounding boundaries.

What does the pattern repeat input actually do?

Pattern Repeat shortens the usable length of each roll before it's divided into strips, since matching a repeating pattern between strips wastes some material at each cut. Leaving it at 0 assumes a plain or textured wallpaper with no pattern to match, which maximizes the number of strips you get from each roll.
