US recipe measurements form a single chain of volume units -- teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons -- all defined as fixed multiples of each other, and this calculator converts an Amount in any one of those units (plus milliliters and liters for metric recipes) into all the others at once. Internally, every conversion routes through milliliters as a common reference point: the Amount is first converted to milliliters using its Convert From unit's factor, then that milliliter figure is divided back out into each target unit. Because every output is Amount multiplied by a fixed positive conversion factor, raising Amount always raises every unit's result in direct proportion, no matter which unit you're converting from -- doubling the Amount doubles every output figure simultaneously.

The standard conversions used here follow US customary measures: 1 cup equals 16 tablespoons, 48 teaspoons, 8 fluid ounces, and 236.588 milliliters, and 1 gallon equals 4 quarts, 8 pints, or 16 cups. This is especially useful for scaling recipes between the odd-sized measuring tools you actually have on hand, or for converting a recipe written in metric units into cups and tablespoons for a US kitchen.
