How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the total cook time in hours.
- Select your smoker type (offset, kettle, ceramic, etc.).
- Enter the current ambient temperature, which affects fuel consumption.
- The calculator returns total charcoal needed, number of 20-lb bags, wood chunks for smoke, hourly burn rate, and estimated cost.
- Load the charcoal and wood ahead of the cook to avoid running out mid-session.
How the result changes with Cook Time
| Cook Time | Charcoal Needed | Wood Chunks |
|---|---|---|
| 3.3 | 9.9 lbs | 3.3 lbs |
| 9.05 | 27.2 lbs | 4 lbs |
| 16 | 48 lbs | 4 lbs |
| 22 | 66 lbs | 4 lbs |
What each input means
- Cook Time
- Total expected cook time in hours.
- Smoker Type
- 1 = Offset (3 lbs/hr — large firebox), 2 = Kamado (1.5 lbs/hr — insulated ceramic), 3 = Kettle (2 lbs/hr).
- Ambient Temperature
- Outside air temperature. Colder weather increases fuel consumption (~2% per degree below 70°F).
