How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your smoker's set temperature and current ambient temperature.
- Set how long the door was open in minutes.
- Select your smoker type to account for thermal mass differences.
- The calculator shows estimated temperature drop, recovery time in minutes, and extra fuel consumed.
- Use recovery time to avoid opening the smoker again too soon during a sensitive phase of the cook.
How the result changes with Set Temperature
| Set Temperature | Recovery Time | Estimated Temp Drop |
|---|---|---|
| 212 | 3.6 min | 21°F |
| 292 | 5.6 min | 33°F |
| 388 | 8 min | 48°F |
| 468 | 10 min | 60°F |
What each input means
- Set Temperature
- Your target smoker temperature before opening the door.
- Ambient Temperature
- Outside air temperature. Larger gap from set temp means longer recovery.
- Door Open Duration
- How long the smoker door/lid was open in seconds. Quick peeks (10-15s) minimize heat loss.
- Smoker Type
- 1 = Offset (8 min — large heat loss), 2 = Kamado (3 min — insulated ceramic), 3 = Pellet (5 min), 4 = Electric (6 min).
