Water Chemistry Calculator
Calculate gypsum and calcium chloride additions to hit target mineral levels for your brewing water profile.
Inputs
Results
Gypsum (CaSO4)
7.12 grams
Calcium Chloride (CaCl2)
4.12 grams
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your water volume in gallons and set target calcium, sulfate, and chloride levels (ppm).
- Enter your source water calcium level so the calculator adjusts additions accordingly.
- Review Gypsum (g) and Calcium Chloride (g) additions needed.
- Check Resulting Calcium and Sulfate-to-Chloride Ratio, along with the water volume converted to liters, to confirm your target water profile.
How the result changes with Water Volume
| Water Volume | Gypsum (CaSO4) | Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) |
|---|---|---|
| 5.9 | 6 grams | 3.47 grams |
| 18 | 18.32 grams | 10.6 grams |
| 33 | 33.58 grams | 19.43 grams |
| 45 | 45.79 grams | 26.49 grams |
What each input means
- Water Volume
- Total volume of brewing water to treat in gallons (mash + sparge combined).
- Target Calcium
- Target calcium level in ppm. 50-150 ppm is typical; needed for enzyme activity and yeast health.
- Target Sulfate
- Target sulfate level in ppm. Higher for hoppy beers (200-300), lower for malty styles (50-100).
- Target Chloride
- Target chloride level in ppm. Higher for malty fullness (100-150), lower for crisp hoppy beers (50-75).
- Source Water Calcium
- Calcium level of your source water in ppm. Check your local water report or use RO/distilled (0 ppm) for a clean slate.
