How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the project width in inches and the warp sett (ends per inch, EPI).
- Enter the project length in inches and the weft sett (picks per inch, PPI).
- Set the warp color repeat — for example, 2 for ABAB alternating, 4 for AABB blocks.
- Set the weft color repeat and the percentage of color A in both warp and weft.
- Read the total pattern blocks and repeat width/height to visualize how the color-and-weave effect tiles across the fabric.
- Use the color A total percentage to plan yarn quantities for each color.
How the result changes with Project width (inches)
| Project width (inches) | Pattern blocks | Color A total % |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | 8,424 | 50% |
| 43 | 27,864 | 50% |
| 78 | 50,544 | 50% |
| 108 | 69,984 | 50% |
What each input means
- Project width (inches)
- Width of the project on the loom.
- Project length (inches)
- Length of the project on the loom.
- Ends per inch (EPI)
- Warp sett.
- Picks per inch (PPI)
- Weft sett.
- Warp color repeat (ends)
- Number of ends in one color repeat (e.g., 2 for ABAB, 4 for AABB).
- Weft color repeat (picks)
- Number of picks in one color repeat.
- Color A in warp %
- Percentage of warp ends in color A (rest are color B).
- Color A in weft %
- Percentage of weft picks in color A (rest are color B).
What each result means
- Pattern blocks
- Total number of complete pattern repeat blocks across the fabric.
- Repeat width (inches)
- Width of one pattern repeat unit.
- Repeat height (inches)
- Height of one pattern repeat unit.
- Color A total %
- Percentage of total yarn that is color A.
- Color B total %
- Percentage of total yarn that is color B.
- Dominant block type %
- Coverage of the most common color intersection type.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersProject width (inches) = 20, Project length (inches) = 72, Ends per inch (EPI) = 12, Picks per inch (PPI) = 12 = 8 input(s) provided
- Calculate Pattern blocksPattern blocks = warpRepeats * weftRepeats12960 = 12960
- Calculate Color A total %Color A total % = ((warpColorAEnds / max(1, totalEnds)) * 50 +50 = 50%
- Calculate Repeat widthRepeat width = warpRepeat / epi0.33 = 0.33
- Calculate Repeat heightRepeat height = weftRepeat / ppi0.33 = 0.33
