Edge Finishing Calculator

Estimate burnishing time and edge paint quantity for leather edge finishing. Supports burnishing, edge paint, or both methods combined.

About this calculator

This calculator scales two very different processes off the same two measurements -- Total Edge Length and Finishing Layers -- because both burnishing and edge painting are applied per pass, per foot of edge. Burnishing Time assumes 2 minutes of work per foot of edge for every layer/pass at your chosen Finishing Method (1 or 3), which covers the friction-and-water (or gum tragacanth/beeswax) technique of compressing and sealing raw leather fiber into a smooth, rounded edge. Edge Paint Needed assumes 0.5 mL of product per foot per layer at method 2 or 3, which is a rough middle-of-the-road figure -- thin, watery edge paints go further per coat while thick acrylic edge coats use noticeably more. Total Edge Length is what actually moves both figures: it's a straight linear multiplier on whichever of Burnishing Time or Edge Paint Needed applies for your chosen method, so doubling the length you're finishing always doubles the time or paint needed at a fixed number of layers.

Finishing Method itself changes which figures apply (method 2 produces zero Burnishing Time, method 1 produces zero Edge Paint Needed) rather than scaling anything up or down. Total Time Estimate adds a further assumption whenever edge paint is involved (method 2 or 3): on top of the material-volume figure, it assumes 1 minute of hands-on painting time per foot per layer -- the same per-foot/per-layer shape as the burnishing rate, just a separate assumed pace for the painting motion itself. What this calculator does not account for: leather thickness or edge porosity, both of which change how many coats of edge paint actually soak in before you get a sealed, glossy result, or the dry time between coats, which is real elapsed time but not hands-on work time.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Total Edge Length to finish, in feet — add up every edge on the piece, not just the outer perimeter.
  2. Set Finishing Layers to the number of burnishing or painting passes you plan to make (2-3 is typical for a durable edge).
  3. Choose the Finishing Method: burnish only, edge paint only, or both combined.
  4. Review Burnishing Time and/or Edge Paint Needed depending on the method chosen, plus the Total Time Estimate for the job.
  5. Use Total Edge Length (in inches) to cross-check your measurement against a tape or wheel.

What each input means

Total Edge Length
Total length of all edges to finish in feet
Finishing Layers
Number of burnishing/painting passes (2-3 recommended for best results)
Finishing Method
Burnishing uses friction and heat to compress and seal the edge fibers. Edge paint builds a flexible coating instead. Both applies both processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does switching Finishing Method change how fast burnishing goes, or just whether it happens?

Just whether it happens. Burnishing Time is computed the same way (2 minutes per foot per layer) whenever method is Burnish only or Both -- picking Both doesn't slow the burnishing part down or change its rate, it simply adds Edge Paint Needed on top as a separate quantity. Method changes which outputs are nonzero, not the per-foot rate any individual output uses once it applies.

Why does adding another layer double my time and paint estimate?

Finishing Layers is a direct multiplier on both Burnishing Time and Edge Paint Needed, on the assumption that each pass over the edge takes roughly the same amount of time and product as the first. Going from 2 layers to 4 doubles both figures because the calculator has no way to know if later passes go faster (they often do, once the edge is mostly sealed) -- treat the linear scaling as an upper-bound estimate for additional passes.

Is 0.5 mL per foot per layer accurate for any edge paint product?

It's a rough middle estimate, not a product-specific figure. Thin, water-based edge paints applied with a wool dauber often go further per coat, while thick acrylic edge coats built up with a roller or brush can use noticeably more per pass. Treat Edge Paint Needed as a starting-point estimate for ordering supplies, and adjust based on your first project's actual consumption for a given product.

Should I measure Total Edge Length around the whole piece, or just the visible edge?

Add up every edge you plan to finish, not just the outer perimeter -- a wallet or bag typically has front, back, gusset, and pocket edges that all need burnishing or painting separately, and skipping interior edges will make this calculator significantly underestimate your real total time or product needed. Measure with a flexible tape or string along each edge and sum the results before entering Total Edge Length.
