Furniture Finish Schedule Calculator
Calculate finish material quantities, dry times, and total project timeline for polyurethane, lacquer, oil, shellac, and other wood finishes.
Inputs

Finish needed (quarts)
0.72
Dry time between coats (hrs)
6
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the Surface Area in square feet and select the Finish Type (oil poly, water poly, lacquer, oils, shellac).
- Enter the Number of Coats, whether to Sand Between Coats, and current Temperature and Humidity.
- Indicate whether you are applying a stain before the topcoat.
- Review Finish and Stain quantities in quarts, Dry Time Between Coats adjusted for your shop conditions.
- Check Total Elapsed Days (8-hr workdays) and Full Cure Time to schedule the project timeline.
How the result changes with Surface area (sq ft)
| Surface area (sq ft) | Finish needed (quarts) | Dry time between coats (hrs) |
|---|---|---|
| 51 | 1.22 | 6 |
| 176 | 4.22 | 6 |
| 325 | 7.8 | 6 |
| 450 | 10.8 | 6 |
What each input means
- Surface area (sq ft)
- Total surface area to finish. A dining table top is ~18 sq ft; with legs/apron ~30 sq ft.
- Finish (0=OilPoly..5=Shellac 6=WipeOn)
- Select the finish (0=oilpoly..5=shellac 6=wipeon)
- Number of coats
- Typical: 3 coats for poly/lacquer, 3-5 for oil finishes, 3 for shellac.
- Sand between coats
- Sanding between coats with 220-320 grit. Recommended for best adhesion.
- Ambient temperature (F)
- Shop temperature. Below 60F significantly slows drying.
- Relative humidity (%)
- High humidity (>65%) slows dry time, especially for oil-based finishes.
- Apply stain first
- Whether to apply wood stain before the topcoat finish.
What each result means
- Finish needed (quarts)
- Quarts of topcoat finish for all coats.
- Stain needed (quarts)
- Quarts of stain (0 if not staining).
- Dry time between coats (hrs)
- Adjusted recoat wait time based on temperature and humidity.
- Application time per coat (hrs)
- Estimated hands-on time to apply one coat.
- Total hands-on time (hrs)
- Active working time for staining, coating, and inter-coat sanding.
- Total elapsed time (hrs)
- Wall-clock time from start to last coat dry, including wait times.
- Total elapsed (8-hr days)
- Elapsed time expressed in 8-hour working days.
- Full cure time (days)
- Days until finish is fully hardened and safe for normal use.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersSurface area (sq ft) = 30, Finish (0=OilPoly..5=Shellac 6=WipeOn) = 0, Number of coats = 3, Sand between coats = 1 = 7 input(s) provided
- Calculate Finish neededFinish needed = (surfaceAreaSqFt * numCoats) / coveragePerQt0.72 = 0.72
- Calculate Dry time between coatsDry time between coats = baseDryTime * tempFactor * humidityFactor6 = 6
- Calculate Stain needed0 = 0
- Calculate Application time per coat0.3 = 0.3
