How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your loom's maximum weaving width in inches.
  2. Enter the heddle dent size (slots per inch) — common sizes are 5, 8, 10, and 12 dent.
  3. Enter the desired finished length and width of the woven piece after washing.
  4. Set the shrinkage and take-up percentages for your fiber — 8% shrinkage and 10% take-up are typical for cotton.
  5. Enter the yards per ball or skein of your chosen yarn.
  6. Read the warp and weft yarn yardage needed, total yardage, and number of balls or skeins to buy.

What each input means

Loom weaving width (in)
Maximum weaving width of your rigid heddle loom.
Heddle dent (slots per inch)
Your rigid heddle size: 5, 8, 10, or 12 dent are most common.
Finished length (inches)
Desired finished length of the woven piece.
Finished width (inches)
Desired finished width after washing.
Shrinkage %
Expected shrinkage after wet-finishing.
Take-up %
Warp shortening from interlacement.
Yards per ball/skein
Yardage in each ball or skein of your chosen yarn.

What each result means

Total warp ends
Number of warp threads (slots + holes).
Warp yarn (yards)
Warp yardage needed.
Weft yarn (yards)
Weft yardage needed.
Total yarn (yards)
Combined warp + weft yardage.
Balls/skeins needed
Number of yarn balls needed (same yarn for warp and weft).
Fits on loom (1=yes, 0=no)
Whether your project width fits the loom weaving width.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Loom weaving width (in) = 20, Heddle dent (slots per inch) = 10, Finished length (inches) = 60, Finished width (inches) = 15 = 7 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Warp yarn
    Warp yarn = (totalEnds * warpLength) / 36
    486 = 486
  3. Calculate Weft yarn
    Weft yarn = (totalPicks * widthOnLoom * 1.1) / 36
    321 = 321
  4. Calculate Total warp ends
    Total warp ends = round(widthOnLoom * epi)
    161 = 161
  5. Calculate Total yarn
    Total yarn = warpYarnYards + weftYarnYards
    807 = 807
