How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Stain type, Fabric sensitivity, and Stain age (hours).
- Set Stain area (cm²).
- Review the Difficulty score (1-10) result.
- Use Success probability (%) and Soak time per cycle (min) to inform your decision.
What each input means
- Stain type
- 0=Water-soluble (coffee/tea), 1=Protein (blood/egg), 2=Oil/grease, 3=Tannin (wine/grass), 4=Dye transfer, 5=Ink, 6=Rust/mineral, 7=Combination.
- Fabric sensitivity
- 0=Sturdy (cotton/polyester), 1=Moderate (wool/rayon), 2=Delicate (silk/velvet).
- Stain age (hours)
- Hours since the stain occurred. Fresh stains under 1 hour are easiest to treat.
- Stain area (cm²)
- Approximate area of the stain in square centimeters.
What each result means
- Difficulty score (1-10)
- Overall stain removal difficulty on a 1-10 scale.
- Success probability (%)
- Estimated likelihood of complete stain removal.
- Soak time per cycle (min)
- Recommended soaking time per treatment cycle.
- Treatment cycles needed
- Estimated number of soak-rinse cycles for best results.
- Total treatment time (min)
- Total estimated time including all cycles and rinses.
- Solution concentration (%)
- Recommended cleaning agent concentration as percentage of water.
- Water temperature (°C)
- Recommended water temperature for treatment. Protein stains need cold; oil needs warm.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersStain type = 0, Fabric sensitivity = 0, Stain age (hours) = 1, Stain area (cm²) = 10 = 4 input(s) provided
- Calculate Difficulty scoreDifficulty score = min(10, baseDifficulty * ageFactor * sizeFactor + fabricPenalty)2.2 = 2.2
- Calculate Success probabilitySuccess probability79 = 79
- Calculate Soak time per cycleSoak time per cycle9 = 9
